Escrita inteiramente por Leonard Cohen, “The Captain”
foi gravada no início de 1984 no Larrabee Sound Studios em Los Angeles,
Califórnia. A canção teve seu lançamento oficial como a quinta faixa do décimo
álbum de estúdio de Cohen, Various Positions, lançado mundialmente em
dezembro de 1984 pela Columbia Records e CBS Records. A produção da faixa e de
todo o álbum foi assinada por John Lissauer, responsável pela integração dos
sintetizadores e teclados eletrônicos à estética poética de Cohen. Musicalmente,
a faixa funde o Folk Contemporâneo com uma cadência quase militar e elementos
sutis de country europeu. O arranjo é sustentado por sintetizadores rítmicos,
violões acústicos marcados e uma percussão ritmada de marcha, contrastados pela
interpretação vocal grave, seca e narrativa de Cohen, acompanhada pelos vocais
de apoio femininos característicos do álbum. A letra recorre à
metáfora militar para abordar as batalhas internas do envelhecimento, a
rendição, a perda de ilusões ideológicas e os compromissos desgastantes da vida
(“I wanted you, I wanted you, I wanted you for my suit / Now you say you're
leaving, and I can't find my boots / But there's no need to argue, there's no
need to cry / The Captain, he is tired, and the war is over now”). O pessoal da gravação conta com
Leonard Cohen (vocais principais, violão), John Lissauer (arranjos, teclados,
sintetizadores), com vocais de apoio de Anjani Thomas e backing singers de
estúdio. Nas paradas de sucesso, “The Captain” não foi editada comercialmente
como single individual nas paradas da Billboard ou no Reino Unido, funcionando
como uma peça narrativa central dentro do fluxo conceitual de Various
Positions. O álbum teve boa acolhida nos mercados europeus e canadenses,
alcançando o 24º lugar na UK Albums Chart britânica, apesar de não ter sido
lançado inicialmente pela Columbia nos Estados Unidos na época de sua prensagem
original. Em relação a outras versões e registros conhecidos, a canção ganhou
interpretações marcantes ao vivo registradas durante as turnês internacionais
de meados dos anos 1980 e circulou em gravações de transmissão radiofônica da
época. A faixa permanece como uma das composições poéticas mais emblemáticas do
período de transição estética de Cohen rumo às texturas eletrônicas que
culminariam anos mais tarde no álbum I'm Your Man.
