Escrita inteiramente por John Lennon durante uma
viagem de barco às Bermudas no verão de 1980, “Borrowed Time” foi inspirada em
uma terrível tempestade que o músico enfrentou no mar aberto, bem como na
influência da música reggae que ele ouvia durante sua estadia na ilha. As
faixas básicas de estúdio foram gravadas em agosto de 1980 no The Hit Factory,
em Nova York, durante as sessões de Double Fantasy. Com o assassinato de
Lennon antes da conclusão dos vocais definitivos e da mixagem final, a faixa
permaneceu inacabada até ser completada e produzida postumamente por Yoko Ono.
Foi lançada em março de 1984 como o segundo single oficial do álbum póstumo Milk
and Honey, pela gravadora Polydor. Musicalmente, a faixa destaca-se pelo
ritmo descontraído e suingado com fortes inflexões de Reggae e Pop-Rock,
apoiado por guitarras limpas e sincopadas, um baixo ágil e uma levada
percussiva fluida. A canção reflete a maturidade de
Lennon ao completar 40 anos, abordando a fragilidade da vida, o alívio de
sobreviver aos excessos da juventude e a percepção de que o tempo restante é um
bônus precioso (“Living on borrowed time / Without a thought for tomorrow /
Good to be older, would not want to be younger / The world begins at forty, so
they say / Well, only when you're older can you see things that way”). O pessoal da gravação conta com
John Lennon (vocais principais, guitarra base), Hugh McCracken e Earl Slick
(guitarras), Tony Levin (baixo), George Small (teclados), Andy Newmark
(bateria) e Arthur Jenkins Jr. (percussão). Nas paradas de sucesso, “Borrowed
Time” teve desempenho moderado nas tabelas internacionais, alcançando a 32ª
posição na UK Singles Chart no Reino Unido e o 108º lugar na Billboard Bubbling
Under Hot 100 nos Estados Unidos. O álbum Milk and Honey teve forte
recepção comercial e crítica, atingindo o 3º lugar na UK Albums Chart e o 11º
lugar na Billboard 200 norte-americana. O lançamento do single no formato
compacto de vinil e 12 polegadas trouxe no Lado B a faixa “Your Hands”,
interpretada por Yoko Ono. Em relação a outras versões e registros conhecidos,
uma tomada acústica mais crua gravada nas Bermudas com violão e voz apareceu na
caixa John Lennon Anthology (1998) e no álbum Acoustic (2004),
revelando a intimidade e a espontaneidade da composição em seu estado original.
