Escrita inteiramente por Bruce Springsteen, “Glory
Days” foi gravada entre abril e maio de 1982 no The Power Station, na cidade de
Nova York, durante as sessões prolíficas que deram origem tanto ao álbum
acústico Nebraska quanto ao clássico Born in the U.S.A.. A faixa
foi lançada mundialmente como parte do álbum em 4 de junho de 1984 e
posteriormente editada como o quinto single oficial do disco em maio de 1985
pela Columbia Records, trazendo no Lado B a faixa “Stand on It”. A produção foi
assinada em conjunto por Bruce Springsteen, Jon Landau, Chuck Plotkin e Steve
Van Zandt. Musicalmente, a faixa é um dos retratos mais contagiantes do
Heartland Rock e do Pop-Rock radiofônico dos anos 1980. Construída sobre um
riff animado de sintetizador e órgão tocado por Danny Federici e Roy Bittan, a
música combina a energia direta da garagem com o peso rítmico da bateria de Max
Weinberg e as guitarras vigorosas de Springsteen e Van Zandt. A
letra utiliza narrativas cotidianas baseadas em encontros reais de Springsteen
com velhos colegas de escola, abordando com nostalgia bem-humorada e um toque
de melancolia o apego excessivo às glórias da juventude e a inevitável passagem
do tempo (“I had a friend was a big baseball player back in high school / He
could throw that speedball by you, make you look like a fool boy / Saw him the
other night at this roadside bar / I was walking in, he was walking out / We
went back inside, sat down, had a few drinks / But all he kept talking about
was glory days”). O pessoal da
gravação conta com Bruce Springsteen (vocais principais, guitarra), Steve Van Zandt
(guitarra base, vocais de apoio), Garry Tallent (baixo), Roy Bittan (piano,
sintetizadores), Danny Federici (órgão), Max Weinberg (bateria) e Clarence
Clemons (percussão, vocais de apoio). Nas paradas de sucesso, “Glory Days”
manteve o ritmo avassalador do álbum nas rádios globais, tornando-se o quinto
single consecutivo do LP a atingir o Top 10 nos Estados Unidos, alcançando a 5ª
posição na Billboard Hot 100 no verão de 1985. No Reino Unido, alcançou a 17ª
posição na UK Singles Chart. O álbum Born in the U.S.A. quebrou recordes
históricos ao emplacar sete singles no Top 10 da Billboard, consolidando
Springsteen como um fenômeno global. O videoclipe oficial, dirigido pelo
cineasta John Sayles e gravado em Nova Jersey, contou com a participação do
lendário jogador de beisebol da MLB Julian Tavarez (e referências visuais à
vida dos subúrbios operários), além de cenas da banda tocando em um pequeno bar
local. Em relação a outras versões e interpretações conhecidas, destaca-se a
versão estendida de 12 polegadas com um corte alternativo de estúdio, além de
inúmeros registros ao vivo lendários capturados nas turnês mundiais da E Street
Band e lançados em compilações como Live/1975–85 e no registro filmado Bruce
Springsteen with The Sessions Band: Live in Dublin (2007).
