Escrita por Eric Clapton, “The Shape You're In” foi gravada no final de 1982 nos Compass Point Studios, em Nassau, Bahamas, e lançada primeiro no álbum Money and Cigarettes, o nono álbum de estúdio de Eric Clapton, em 21 de fevereiro de 1983. A faixa foi lançada como single em abril de 1983, com “Never Make You Cry” no lado B. A produção ficou por conta de Tom Dowd. Diferente das baladas mais melancólicas do álbum, “The Shape You're In” é uma música animada, irônica e com um tom bem-humorado. Na letra, Clapton zoa uma pessoa (provavelmente uma mulher) que vive uma vida desregrada, bebendo, fumando e se destruindo, mas que ainda assim mantém uma boa aparência (“the shape you're in”). É uma crítica leve, sarcástica e divertida sobre vícios, autoengano e o estilo de vida rock ‘n’ roll. Musicalmente, a faixa tem um arranjo de rock bem pra cima, com guitarra cortante, ritmo dançante e uma energia positiva. O solo de guitarra de Eric Clapton é marcante e cheio de feeling, característico da sua fase dos anos 80. Nos charts, a música chegou no Reino Unido ao 75º lugar.
