Taupin (letra), “I'm Still Standing” foi gravada entre setembro e dezembro de
1982 no Air Studios em Montserrat e no Caribou Ranch no Colorado.
A canção teve seu lançamento oficial como o primeiro single (nos EUA) e segundo
single (no Reino Unido) do décimo sétimo álbum de estúdio de Elton John, Too
Low for Zero, lançado mundialmente em maio de 1983 pela The Rocket Record
Company (UK) e Geffen Records (US). A produção da faixa e de todo o álbum foi
assinada por Chris Thomas, que capturou a sonoridade polida e eclética do
artista. Musicalmente, “I'm Still Standing” é um dos exemplos mais emblemáticos
da Pop-Rock e Synth-Pop pulsante e sofisticada do início dos anos
1980. A faixa é construída sobre um riff de piano rítmico e direto,
ganchos melódicos cativantes e uma seção rítmica sólida. A letra adota uma
linguagem sincera e ligeiramente cínica sobre relações amorosas e a sinceridade
inesperada das confissões noturnas (“Don't you know I'm still standing better
than I ever did / Looking like a true survivor, feeling like a little kid”). O
tom é descontraído e otimista, com a interpretação vocal carismática de Elton
John. O personnel da gravação conta com Elton John (vocais principais, piano,
sintetizadores), Davey Johnstone (guitarra elétrica, vocais de apoio), Dee
Murray (baixo, vocais de apoio) e Nigel Olsson (bateria, vocais de apoio). Nas
paradas de sucesso, “I'm Still Standing” obteve excelente desempenho comercial
e popularidade, alcançando o 12º lugar na Billboard Hot 100 dos Estados Unidos

Chart. O álbum Too Low for Zero obteve boa tração comercial, alcançando
a posição nº 25 na Billboard 200 dos Estados Unidos e nº 7 na UK Albums Chart
no Reino Unido, consolidando o pop-rock e dance-pop do período. Em
relação a outras versões e interpretações conhecidas, destaca-se principalmente
a versão ao vivo gravada em Montreal e incluída no single, bem como as
execuções cativantes durante a turnê Serious Moonlight que promoveu o álbum, e
um registro ao vivo dessa época está disponível no álbum e filme Serious
Moonlight (1984). Por se tratar de um tema cult do catálogo de Bowie, a
canção também foi incluída em diversas compilações retrospectivas da banda
dedicadas à era dance-pop e é frequentemente executada em turnês tributo
por músicos colaboradores e fãs de sua música.
