Escrita coletivamente por Coz Canler, Jimmy Marinos,
Wally Palmar, Mike Skill e Peter Solley, “Talking in Your Sleep” foi gravada em
meados de 1983. A canção teve seu lançamento oficial como o primeiro single do
quarto álbum de estúdio da banda, In Heat, lançado em setembro de 1983
pela Nemperor Records, um selo da CBS. A produção da faixa e de todo o álbum
foi assinada por Peter Solley, que capturou a sonoridade enérgica e melódica
característica do grupo. Musicalmente, “Talking in Your Sleep” é um dos
exemplos mais emblemáticos da New Wave e Power Pop pulsante do
início dos anos 1980. A faixa é construída sobre um riff de guitarra
rítmico e direto, ganchos melódicos fortes e uma seção rítmica sólida. A letra
adota um tom direto e ligeiramente cínico sobre relações amorosas e a
sinceridade inesperada das confissões noturnas (“I hear the secrets that you
keep / When you're talking in your sleep”). O tom é descontraído e otimista,
com a interpretação vocal carismática de Wally Palmar. O pessoal da gravação

Estados Unidos no início de 1984. O single também atingiu a 1ª posição no
Canadá e na parada Hot Dance Club Play da Billboard. O álbum In Heat
obteve boa tração comercial, alcançando a posição nº 14 na Billboard 200 dos
Estados Unidos e nº 4 na Austrália. Em relação a outras versões e
interpretações conhecidas, destaca-se principalmente a versão cover da
banda pop britânica Bucks Fizz, lançada em agosto de 1984, que alcançou a 15ª
posição na UK Singles Chart no Reino Unido, onde a versão original falhou em
chartear. A canção também foi incluída em diversas compilações retrospectivas
dedicadas à era New Wave e Power Pop e é frequentemente executada
em turnês tributo por músicos colaboradores e fãs de sua música.
