Escrita inteiramente por Bruce Springsteen, foi a última faixa gravada para o álbum, registrada em fevereiro
de 1984 no The Hit Factory, na cidade de Nova York. A canção nasceu após o
empresário Jon Landau exigir que Springsteen compusesse um single radiofônico
certeiro para o disco. Lançada em 9 de maio de 1984 pela Columbia Records, foi
o primeiro single oficial a promover o estrondoso álbum Born in the U.S.A.,
lançado mundialmente no mês seguinte. A produção foi assinada conjuntamente por
Jon Landau, Chuck Plotkin, Bruce Springsteen e Steve Van Zandt. Musicalmente, a
faixa representou uma evolução na sonoridade de Springsteen ao incorporar
elementos marcantes do Synth-Pop e Dance-Rock ao seu tradicional Heartland
Rock. O arranjo é ancorado por um riff de sintetizador cativante tocado por Roy
Bittan, complementado pela precisão rítmica da bateria de Max Weinberg e o
baixo pulsante de Garry Tallent. A letra expressa a angústia criativa, a
frustração com o próprio isolamento e a necessidade urgente de transformação
pessoal e conexão (“You can't start a fire / You can't start a fire without a
spark / This gun's for hire / Even if we're just dancing in the dark”). O
pessoal da gravação conta com Bruce Springsteen (vocais principais, guitarra),
Roy Bittan (sintetizadores, piano), Danny Federici (órgão), Garry Tallent
(baixo), Max Weinberg (bateria), Steven Van Zandt (guitarra base, vocais de
apoio) e Clarence Clemons (saxofone, percussão, vocais de apoio). Nas paradas
de sucesso, “Dancing in the Dark” tornou-se o maior hit comercial da carreira
de Springsteen nos Estados Unidos, alcançando a 2ª posição na Billboard Hot 100
(onde permaneceu por quatro semanas consecutivas) e vendendo mais de um milhão
de cópias em vinil. No Reino Unido, alcançou a 4ª posição na UK Singles Chart.
A performance rendeu a Springsteen o Grammy de Melhor Performance Vocal
Masculina de Rock em 1985. O famoso videoclipe oficial foi dirigido por Brian
De Palma e filmado durante a abertura da turnê no Saint Paul Civic Center, em
Minnesota, ficando eternizado pela cena em que Springsteen convida uma jovem fã
(a atriz Courteney Cox, em início de carreira) para dançar com ele no palco. Em
relação a outras versões, destaca-se o remix estendido de 12 polegadas criado
pelo produtor Arthur Baker, além de célebres releituras ao longo dos anos
feitas por artistas de variados gêneros, como Amy Macdonald, Ted Leo, e a
versão eletrônica indie da banda Hot Chip.
