Escrita inteiramente pelo vocalista Robert Smith e
gravada em agosto de 1983 nos estúdios da Fiction Records, “The Lovecats” foi
lançada primeiramente como um compacto simples (single) de 7 e 12 polegadas no
dia 18 de outubro de 1983 pela Fiction Records no Reino Unido, distribuída pela
Polydor, e pela Sire Records nos Estados Unidos. Esse foi o primeiro single
autônomo da banda após a saída do baixista Simon Gallup. O Lado B do compacto
de 7 polegadas trazia a canção “Speak My Language”, enquanto a versão de 12
polegadas incluía também “Mr. Pink Eyes”. Posteriormente, a faixa foi incluída
como a última música da compilação de singles e lados B, Japanese Whispers,
lançada em 12 de dezembro de 1983 no Reino Unido (6 de dezembro nos EUA), que é
considerada o segundo álbum de compilação da banda, preenchendo o vazio entre
os álbuns de estúdio Pornography (1982) e The Top (1984). A
produção da faixa ficou a cargo de Phil Thornalley e Chris Parry, juntamente
com o próprio Robert Smith. Musicalmente, a canção representa uma mudança
drástica no estilo da banda, abandonando o Goth Rock sombrio e opressor dos
álbuns anteriores em favor de um New Wave pop com fortes influências de Jazz,
Swing e Skiffle, caracterizado por um walking double bass proeminente, toques
de vibrafone, palmas sincopadas e o vocal flexível e brincalhão de Smith. A
letra é uma parábola caprichosa e ligeiramente macabra sobre amor, obsessão,
vulnerabilidade e a natureza selvagem e instintiva dos gatos, usando metáforas
felinas para descrever uma conexão intensa e um pouco perigosa (“We slip
through the streets while everyone sleeps / Getting bigger and sleeker and
wider and brighter / We bite and scratch and scream all night / Let’s go and
throw all the songs we know”). O personnel da gravação foi uma formação de
transição e inclui Robert Smith (vocais, guitarras, teclados), Lol Tolhurst
(vibrafone), Phil Thornalley (double bass, engenharia) e Andy Anderson
(bateria, percussão). Nos charts mundiais, o compacto obteve o melhor
desempenho da banda até então: alcançou o 7º lugar na UK Singles Chart (Reino
Unido), seu primeiro Top 10, o 6º lugar na Irlanda, o 15º lugar na Austrália, o
3º lugar na Nova Zelândia, o 44º lugar nos EUA (Billboard Hot 100), o 28º lugar
na Bélgica e o 44º lugar na Alemanha.
