Escrita conjuntamente por Bill Berry, Peter Buck, Mike
Mills e Michael Stipe no final de 1980, “Sitting Still” teve seu lançamento
original em 8 de julho de 1981 como o Lado B do influente single de estreia da
banda, “Radio Free Europe”, pelo selo independente Hib-Tone. A gravação ocorreu
em abril e maio de 1981 no Drive-In Studios em Winston-Salem, Carolina do
Norte, sob a produção de Mitch Easter. A faixa foi posteriormente remasterizada
(e com leve alteração na velocidade de reprodução da fita) para integrar a
ordem oficial do seminal álbum de estreia da banda, Murmur, lançado em
12 de abril de 1983 pela I.R.S. Records, figurando como a 8ª faixa do disco
(lado B do vinil). Musicalmente, a canção representa a essência do Jangle Pop e
do Post-Punk do início da carreira do R.E.M., destacando-se pelo dedilhado
marcante de Peter Buck na guitarra Rickenbacker — frequentemente comparado ao
som do The Byrds — e por uma linha de baixo reta de inspiração punk tocada por
Mike Mills. A letra, característica do estilo impenetrável e abstrato de
Michael Stipe na época, combina enunciações vocais intencionalmente abafadas
com fragmentos líricos inspirados em sua irmã defensora e professora de
crianças surdas (“I can hear you / Can you hear me?”). O personnel da gravação
traz Michael Stipe (vocais), Peter Buck (guitarra), Mike Mills (baixo, vocais
de apoio) e Bill Berry (bateria, percussão), sob produção técnica de Mitch
Easter e Don Dixon. Embora não tenha sido lançada como um single comercial
próprio para as paradas globais de pop em 1983, a faixa impulsionou a reputação
crítica de Murmur, álbum que atingiu a posição nº 36 na Billboard 200
norte-americana e superou lançamentos comerciais de grande porte da época ao
ser eleito o "Álbum do Ano" de 1983 pela revista Rolling Stone.
Sobre outras versões e gravações conhecidas, destaca-se a mixagem original do
single da Hib-Tone de 1981 (que apresenta andamento e balanço levemente
distintos da versão presente em Murmur), reeditada no disco bônus da
coletânea And I Feel Fine... The Best of the I.R.S. Years 1982–1987
(2006). A banda também lançou registros ao vivo oficiais da canção, como a
marcante performance presente no álbum ao vivo Live at the Olympia
(2009), gravado em Dublin.
