Foi a primeira gravação solo em que Michael pode participar do controle criativo da direção. Foi o segundo hit número 1 no Billboard Hot100. E chegou ao número 1 em outros países. Foi número 3 no Reino Unido, número 1 na Austrália, Canadá, Dinamarca, Irlanda, Nova Zelandia, Noruega e África do Sul. Foi número 2 na Bélgica e Holanda. Número 4 na Suíça, número 5 na Finlandia e Espanha. Foi número 11 na Áustria, número 12 na França, número 13 na Alemanha, número 15 na Itália e número 18 na Suécia. Foi o primeiro Grammy que Michael ganhou. A revista Rolling Stone disse que era a terceira melhor música de Michael. Michael Jackson cantou, tocou percussão e fez backing vocals. Jim Gilstrap, Augie Johnson, Mortonette Jenkins, Paulette McWilliams e Zedric Williams fizeram backing vocals. Louis Johnson tocou baixo, John Robinson tocou bateria, Greg Phillinganes tocou piano acústico, piano elétrico e sintatizadores. David Williams e Marlo Henderson tocaram guitarra. Randy Jackson, Richard Heath, Paulinho da Costa e Sheila E. tocaram percussão. The Seawind Horns fizeram os sopros.
