Escrita por Bon Scott, Angus Young e Malcolm Young, foi gravada entre março e abril de 1979, e lançada em 27 de julho de 1979 no disco de mesmo nome, o sexto da banda. Sairia também no mesmo dia em compacto, com If you want blood como Lado B. Foi produzida por Robert John “Mutt” Lange. O riff de guitarra foi escrito por Angus Young. A letra fala da dureza da vida em turnê e de estar o tempo todo na estrada. A Highway que inspirou a música é a Canning Highway, que liga Perth à Fremantle. Bon Scott, um dos autores, foi encontrado morto no carro de um amigo, seis meses depois da canção ter sido lançada. É a canção australiana mais tocada fora da Austrália de todos os tempos. A revista Triple M fez uma lista das The Most Australian songs of all time e Highway to hell ficou no número 40. É uma das 500 songs that shaped rock and roll, do The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Bon Scott cantou. Angus Young tocou guitarra solo. Malcolm Young tocou guitarra base e fez backing vocals. Cliff Williams tocou baixo e fez backing vocals. Phil Rudd tocou bateria. Chegou ao número 47 do Billboard Hot 100 e número 56 no Reino Unido. Chegou ao número 14 na Bélgica, número 17 na Holanda, número 23 na França, número 24 na Espanha e Austrália, número 30 na Alemanha, número 36 na Suécia e número 52 na Áustria.
