Tornou-se uma das canções mais pedidas em piano bar no mundo todo. E também uma das canções italianas mais amadas e tocadas. Foi criada com Domenico Modugno e Charles Aznavour em mente. Foi gravada em Roma, no International Recording. Os melhores músicos da Ópera di Roma foram convocados pra gravação, com Peppino e sua banda fazendo a base instrumental. Escrita por Bob Seger, foi gravada em 1972 e lançada em janeiro de 1973 no disco Back in '72. Fala sobre os altos e baixos sociais e emocionais da vida de um roqueiro na estrada. Foi escrita durante uma turnê. Fala de um episódio quando a banda desceu, com cabelos grandes, em um restaurante de caminhoneiros e eles perguntaram : É um homem ou mulher com esses cabelos grandes? Tem um mellotron e um sax. Foi regravada pelo Metallica e Waylon Jennings, entre outros artistas. Escrita por Charles Fox e Norman Gimbel. Foi escrita com ajuda de Lori Lieberman, após ela assistir a um show de Don McLean no final de 1971. Ela própria iria lançar sua versão da música em 1972, mas sem sucesso. A nossa versão de Roberta Flack, de 1973, virou número 1 nos Estados Unidos, Australia e Canada e número 6 no Reino Unido, número 4 na Noruega e número 3 na Irlanda. Em 1996 os Fugees regravaram com Lauryn Hill nos vocais e virou um hit número 1 em 20 países. A versão de Flack no entanto ganhou o Grammy de 1974 de melhor gravação do ano e melhor performance vocal pop. A versão do Fugees ganhou um Grammy em 1997 pra A melhor performance de R&B por uma dupla ou grupo vocal. Lori Lieberman começou um romance com Gimbel, 24 anos mais velho do que ela e casado. Quando ela foi ver o show de Don McLean, que reinava com American Pie, ela gostou de Empty chairs e começou a escrever versos em um guardanapo. Depois ela passou pra Gimbel suas anotações e surgiu essa música. Mas ela não obteve créditos de composição. A versão de Roberta Flack foi gravada em 17 de novembro de 1972 e lançada em 22 de janeiro de 1973 no compacto que tinha Just like a woman como Lado B. Foi lançada também no LP Killing me softly, em 1 de agosto de 1973. Roberta inicialmente ouviu a música no aviao, na voz de Lieberman. Ficou louca, ouviu umas dez vezes e pediu pra Quincy Jones procurar Charles Fox pra poder gravar. Ela tava abrindo um show de Marvin Gaye no Greek Theather e Marvin pediu pra ela cantar mais uma canção. Ela disse que tava trabalhando em uma canção e cantou killing me softly. O público foi ao delírio. Marvin chamou-a e disse: Baby, nunca mais cante essa música ao vivo antes de gravá-la. Logo em seguida após Flack, Anne Murray gravou sua versão. É o número 360 da revista Rolling Stone das 500 greatest songs of all time e número 82 da Billboard greatest songs of all time. Roberta Flack cantou, tocou piano e mudou o ritmo da música. Depois saiu no disco Ringo, em 2 de novembro de 1973. Se transformou num hit internacional. Foi número 1 na Australia, Canadá e no Billboard Hot100. Além disso foi número 2 na Africa do Sul, número 4 na Holanda e Nova Zelandia, número 6 na Noruega e Suíça e número 8 na Bélgica e Reino Unido. Fala de um amor perdido e a fotografia é a única lembrança que resta. O lançamento de Photograph coincidiu com o fim do casamento de Ringo com Maureen, em grande parte por causa do romance dela com George Harrison.
