Escrita por Wally Holmes, foi gravada em 1973 no RCA Music Center of the World, em Hollywood, California e lançada em 7 de dezembro de 1973 no disco de estréia da banda chamado The Hues Corportion. Depois sairia em compacto em maio de 1974 com All Goin' Down together como Lado B. Chegou ao número 1 do Billboard Hot100, também ao número 1 no Canadá. Chegou ao número 2 do Billboard R&B, número 4 na Holanda, número 5 na Africa do Sul, número 6 no Reino Unido e número 8 na Noza Zelandia e número 9 na Irlanda. Fleming Williams fez os vocais e logo depois deixou a banda. Wilton Felder tocou o baixo em vez de James Jamerson. Joe Sample tocou o piano e Larry Calrton tocou guitarra. Jim Gordon tocou bateria. Wally Holmes tocou o trumpete. O produtor John Florez não gostou da letra e jogou-a como Lado B. Depois do sucesso nas boates de NYC, ele mudou de idéia. Rock the boat foi inspiração pr Rock your baby, de KC and The Sunshine Band.
