Escrita por Michael Stipe, Mike Mills, Peter Buck e Bill Berry, “Perfect Circle” foi gravada em 1982 nos Reflection Studios, em Charlotte, Carolina do Norte. A música foi lançada primeiro no álbum Murmur, o álbum de estreia do R.E.M., em 12 de abril de 1983. Não foi lançada como single. A produção ficou por conta de Mitch Easter e Don Dixon.
