Escrita por Marvin Gaye, Odell Brown e David Ritz, foi gravada em 1982, na Bélgica e lançada em 8 de outubro de 1982, no disco Midnight love, o décimo sexto de Marvin. Saiu também em compacto, com uma versão instrumental da mesma música, um dia depois do disco. Foi produzida pelo próprio Marvin Gaye. Este foi o último disco de Marvin, que foi assassinado pelo próprio pai, em abril de 1984. Um dia antes dele completar 45 anos de idade. Sexual healing foi o primeiro compacto dele após deixar a Motown. Chegou ao número 3 no Billboard Hot 100. Chegou ao número 1 no Canada, Nova Zelandia e Quebec. Número 2 na Bélgica. N;úmero 3 na Holanda. Número 4 na Austrália e Reino Unido. Número 7 na Irlanda, número 12 na Finlandia, número 17 na França e Suécia e número 23 na Alemanha Ocidental. Foi gravada na Suécia pois Gaye havia se mudado pra lá após problemas com o imposto de renda americano e depois do seu divórcio. Estava deprimido e viciado em cocaína. Ganhou dois Grammys. Um de Best male r&b vocal performance e Best r&b instrumental performance. Marvin Gaye cantou e fez ao backing vocals, sintetizadores, piano elétrico Fender Rhodes, órgão Hammond e cymbals de dedo. Gordon Banks tocou guitarra elétrica e fez backing vocals. Harvey Fuqua fez backing vocals. Foi regravada pelo Soul Asylum, Michael Bolton e Kate Bush, entre outros artistas. É uma das 500 songs that shaped rock and roll, do Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
