O tema fala de uma infidelidade sexual. Sempre existem músicas que falam de uma moça bem nascida que fugiu com um cigano. No caso da canção de Cohen, ele é o cigano que chega em casa e não encontra sua esposa. Faz referencias bíblicas sobre Judite, Salomé, Ruth, e passagens do Genesis 7-8, a história de Noé e a Arca. Foi feita pra sua esposa, cuja qual ele estava se separando na época, Suzanne Elrod. Ela é a mãe dos dois filhos de Leonard.
