Escrita por Bob Marley, foi gravada entre janeiro e abril de 1980, no Tuff Gong Studios, em Kingston, Jamaica. Foi lançada no disco Uprising, o décimo segundo da banda, em 10 de junho de 1980. Sairia também em compacto, com I Shot the sheriff ao vivo, em 7 de outubro de 1980. Foi produzida por Bob Marley e Chris Blackwell. Parte da letra foi inspirada em um discurso de Marcus Garvey, chamado The work that has been done, feito em Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada, em outubro de 1937. É uma das únicas músicas de Marley que é só tem um violão na gravação, senão a única. Ou seja, ele cantando, voz e violão. Foi regravada por Manfred Mann's Earth Band, Bono com The Edge, Jackson Browne, Stevie Wonder, Wyclef Jean, e Joe Strummer, entre outros artistas.
