É a canção de número 90 da lista das 500 maiores canções de todos os tempos da revista Rolling Stone.

Foi gravada no basement da Saint Bernadette Catholic School em New Haven, Connecticut em fevereiro de 1956. Chegou ao número 24 nos charts pop americanos e número 3 nos charts de R&B. Vendeu mais de 10 milhões de cópias em 1987 e 1988 quando fez parte da trilha sonora do filme Dirty Dancing.

É a única canção a ter a mesma versão 3 vezes nos Hot 100.

Foi regravada por Santo and Johnny, Paul Anka, The Tokens, Dion DiMucci, Deborah Gibson, Jan and Dean, Sha Na Na, The Beach Boys, entre outros artistas.
