Escrita por Rick James e Alonzo Miller, foi gravada entre dezembro de 1980 e janeiro de 1981 no Record Plant em Sausalito, California e em um estúdio da Motown em Hollywood e lançada em 7 de abril de 1981, no disco Street songs, o quinto disco de Rick James. Saiu tambem em compacto, em agosto de 1981, no compacto que tinha uma versão de Super freak instrumental como Lado B. Foi produzida por Rick James. Freak é uma gíria pra quem é muito doido no sexo. Vemos pela frase: “She's a very kinky girl/The kind you don't take home to mother”. Tem backing vocals dos Temptations e de Taborah Johnson. Oscar Alston tocou baixo. Sax tenor tocado por Daniel LeMelle. Chegou ao número 16 no Billboard Hot100, número 2 na Bélgica e Holanda, número 4 na Nova Zelandia, número 26 na Austrália e número 40 no Canadá. Teve seu riff sampleado no outro clássico de MC Hammer U-can't touch this, de 1990. Foi sampleada também por Jay-Z em Kingdom Come, de 2006 e Black Eyed Peas, no compacto Vida Loca de 2020.
