345 – Chuck Berry – You never can tell (1964)

Escrita por Chuck Berry, foi lançada em Agosto de 1964 num compacto que tinha Brenda Lee como Lado B. foi composta enquanto Chuck estava preso por ter transportado uma menor de idade fora da linha do Estado. O que todos dizem que foi apenas um ato pra dar fim ao rock and roll. Chegou ao numero 14 dos charts pop americanos. 

Em 1978, chegou ao Top Ten de Country com Emmylou Harris. Foi tambem regravada por Jerry Garcia, Bruce Springsteen e Bob Seger. 

A canção conta a história de um casamento de dois adolescentes e sua vida depois disso. Vivendo num apartamento modesto, o jovem marido encontra trabalho e eles começam a ter uma prosperidade relativa. Um tempo depois, eles compram um Souped-up Jitney, ou seja, um automovel com modificação pra alta performance e viajam nele pra New Orleans, onde aconteceu o casamento deles, para celebrar o aniversário de casamento. Cada verso acaba com o verso: “C’est la vie, say the old folks, it goes to show you never can tell”. 

 A canção ficou popular novamente quando apareceu no filme Pulp Fiction, de Quentin Tarantino, de 1994. Apareceu numa competição de twist, com John Travolta e Uma Thurman, onde eles competem e ganham.  

Emmylou Harris lançou uma versao dessa canção em 1977, que chegou ao numero 6 nos charts de Country and Western americanos. A gravacao de Harris Chegou a numero 4 na Holanda e 5 na Belgica, assim como numero 41 na Alemanha.  

Foi tambem regravada por Waylon Jennings em 1981, Bill Wyman em 1985, Bob Seger em 1994, Status Quo em 1996, e Bruce Springsteen em 2013.
