hit internacional. É a número 412 das 500 maiores canções de
todos os tempos da revista Rolling Stone. Ela ganhou 3 Grammies com
essa gravação.
A canção
conversas educadas.
A canção
Marie-Jeanne Guillaume. Foi traduzida
também em sueco e em alemao.
Foi
regravada por Jaco Pastorius, Dave Bartholomew, Ella Fitzgerald,
Sinead O'Connor, e tantos outros artistas.
A letra:
It was the third of June, another
sleepy, dusty Delta day I was out choppin' cotton and my brother
was balin' hay And at dinner time we stopped and walked back to
the house to eat And Mama hollered out the back door, "Y'all
remember to wipe your feet." And then she said, "I got
some news this mornin' from Choctaw Ridge. Today Billie Joe
MacAllister jumped off the Tallahatchie Bridge."
And Papa said to Mama as he passed
around the black-eyed peas "Well, Billie Joe never had a lick
of sense. Pass the biscuits, please. There's five more acres in
the lower forty I've got to plow." And Mama said it was a
shame about Billie Joe, anyhow Seems like nothin' ever comes to no
good up on Choctaw Ridge And now Billie Joe MacAllister's jumped
off the Tallahatchie Bridge
And brother said he recollected when he
and Tom and Billie Joe He put a frog down my back at the Carroll
County picture show And wasn't I talkin' to him after church last
Sunday night? "I'll have another piece of apple pie. You
know, it don't seem right. I saw him at the sawmill yesterday on
Choctaw Ridge. And now you tell me Billie Joe's jumped off the
Tallahatchie Bridge."
Mama said to me, "Child, what's
happened to your appetite? I've been cookin' all morning and you
haven't touched a single bite. That nice young preacher, Brother
Taylor, dropped by today. Said he'd be pleased to have dinner on
Sunday. Oh, by the way, He said he saw a girl that looked a lot
like you up on Choctaw Ridge. And she and Billie Joe was throwing
somethin' off the Tallahatchie Bridge."
A year has come 'n' gone since we heard
the news 'bout Billie Joe And brother married Becky Thompson, they
bought a store in Tupelo There was a virus going 'round, Papa
caught it and he died last Spring And now Mama doesn't seem to
wanna do much of anything And me, I spend a lot of time pickin'
flowers up on Choctaw Ridge And drop them into the muddy water off
the Tallahatchie Bridge
Escrita e
Sisters of
ele tinha a canção pronta e tocou-a pra elas.
A letra:
Oh, the sisters
of mercy, they are not departed or gone
They were waiting for me
when I thought that I just can't go on
And they brought me their
comfort and later they brought me this song
Oh, I hope you run
into them, you who've been travelling so long
Yes, you who
must leave everything that you cannot control
It begins with your
family, but soon it comes around to your soul
Well, I've been
where you're hanging, I think I can see how you're pinned
When
you're not feeling holy, your loneliness says that you've
sinned
Well, they lay down beside me, I made my confession to
them
They touched both my eyes and I touched the dew on their
hem
If your life is a leaf that the seasons tear off and
condemn
They will bind you with love that is graceful and green as
a stem
When I left they were sleeping, I hope you run into
them soon
Don't turn on the lights, you can read their address by
the moon
And you won't make me jealous if I hear that they
sweetened your night
We weren't lovers like that and besides, it
would still be all right
We weren't lovers like that and besides,
it would still be all right
A canção é
Pepper's.
Paul cantou,
fez backing vocals, tocou baixo e piano. John fez backing vocals e
tocou guitarra solo. George Harrison fez backing vocals, Ringo tocou
bateria e sinos e Robert Burns, Henry McKenzie e Frank Reudy tocaram
os clarinetes.
A letra:
When I get
older losing my hair
Many years from now
Will you still be
sending me a valentine
Birthday greetings, bottle of wine?
If
I'd been out till quarter to three
Would you lock the door?
Will
you still need me, will you still feed me
When I'm
sixty-four?
You'll be older too
And if you say the word
I
could stay with you
I could be handy, mending a fuse
When
your lights have gone
You can knit a sweater by the
fireside
Sunday mornings go for a ride
Doing the garden,
digging the weeds
Who could ask for more?
Will you still need
me, will you still feed me
When I'm sixty-four?
Every
summer we can rent a cottage in the Isle of Wight
If it's not too
dear
We shall scrimp and save
Grandchildren on your knee
Vera,
Chuck & Dave
Send me a postcard, drop me a line
Stating
point of view
Indicate precisely what you mean to say
Yours
sincerely, wasting away
Give me your answer, fill in a form
Mine
for evermore
Will you still need me, will you still feed me
When
I'm sixty-four?
Ho!

Robbie Williams e Nicole Kidman
Eles gravaram-a
em 1 de fevereiro de 1967. Al Casey tocou guitarra e Hal Blaine
bateria,
A letra:
I know I stand
in line until you think you have the time To spend an evening with
me And if we go someplace to dance, I know that there's a
chance You won't be leaving with me And afterwards we drop into
a quiet little place and have a drink or two And then I go and
spoil it all by saying something stupid like "I love you"
I
can see it in your eyes That you despise the same old lies you
heard the night before And though it's just a line to you, for me
it's true And never seemed so right before
I practice every
day to find some clever lines to say To make the meaning come
through But then I think I'll wait until the evening gets late and
I'm alone with you The time is right, your perfume fills my head,
the stars get red and, oh, the night's so blue And then I go and
spoil it all by saying something stupid like "I love
you"
[instrumental]
The time is right, your
perfume fills my head, the stars get red and, oh, the night's so
blue And then I go and spoil it all by sayin' something stupid
like "I love you"

Eric Burdon, John Weider, Vic Brigs, Danny McCulloch e Barry Jenkins,
Estados Unidos.
Eric Burdon
and The Animals tocaram no festival de Monterey, no cume do verão do
amor.
Jefferson Airplane, Ravu Shankar, The Who, Grateful Dead e Jimi
eles. Brian Jones era um MC no festival.
A letra:
The people came and listened
Some of
them came and played
Others gave flowers away, yes they did
Down
in Monterey, Down in Monterey
Young Gods smiled upon the crowd
Their
music being born of love
Children danced night and day
Religion
was being born
Down in Monterey
The birds and the airplane did fly
Oh,
Ravi Shankar's music made me cry
The Who exploded into fire and
light
Hugh Masakela's music was black as night
The Grateful
Dead blew everybodies mind
Jimi Hendrix baby, believe me, set the
world on fire, yeah
His Majesty, Prince Jones, smiled as he moved
among the crowd
Ten thousand electric guitars were grooving real
loud, yeah
You want to find the truth in
life
Don't pass music by
and you know I would not lie, no I
would not lie,
No, I would not lie
Down in Monterey
Three days of understanding of moving
with one another
Even the cops grooved with us
Do you believe
me, yeah?
Down in Monterey
I think that maybe I'm
dreaming
Monterey
Down in monterey
Did you hear what I said?

em 9 e 21 de fevereiro de 1967 e lançada em 26 de maio de 1967 no
disco Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.
Quem sabe?
Paul tocou
baixo e cantou. John tocou violão e fez backing vocals. George
Harrison tocou guitarra solo e fez backing vocals. Ringo tocou
bateria e maracas. George Martin tocou Harpsichord.
A letra:
I'm
fixing a hole where the rain gets in And stops my mind from
wandering Where it will go
I'm filling the cracks that ran
through the door And kept my mind from wandering Where it will
go
And it really doesn't matter if I'm wrong I'm
right Where I belong I'm right Where I belong See the people
standing there Who disagree and never win And wonder why they
don't get in my door
I'm painting my room in the colourful
way And when my mind is wandering There I will go Ooh ooh
ooh ah ah Hey, hey, hey, hey
And it really doesn't matter
if I'm wrong I'm right Where I belong I'm right Where I
belong Silly people run around They worry me and never ask
me Why they don't get past my door
I'm taking the time for
a number of things That weren't important yesterday And I still
go Ooh ooh ooh ah ah
I'm fixing a hole where the rain gets
in Stops my mind from wandering Where it will go oh Where it
will go oh
I'm fixing a hole where the rain gets in And
stops my mind from wandering Where it will go (fade out)

Jim
Morrison cantou. Ray Manzarek tocou órgão e bass keyboard. Robby
Krieger tocou guitarra e John Densmore tocou bateria.

own?) No I get by with a little help from my friends Mm I get
high with a little help from my friends Mm gonna try with a little
help from my friends
(Do you need anybody?) I need somebody
to love (Could it be anybody?) I want somebody to love

happens all the time (What do you see when you turn out the
light?) I can't tell you, but I know it's mine Oh I get by with
a little help from my friends Mm I get high with a little help
from my friends Oh I'm gonna try with a little help from my
friends

We're Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
Sit back and
let the evening go
Sgt. Pepper's lonely, Sgt. Pepper's lonely
Sgt.

It's wonderful to be here
It's
certainly a thrill
You're such a lovely audience
We'd like to
take you home with us
We'd love to take you home
I don't
really want to stop the show
But I thought that you might like to
know
That the singer's going to sing a song
And he wants you
all to sing along
So let me introduce to you
The one and only

A letra:
In my
loneliness,
when you're
gone and I'm all by myself
and I need
your caress
I just think
of you,
and the
thought of you holding me near
Makes my
loneliness soon disappear.
Though
you're far away,
I have only
to close my eyes
and you are
back to stay
I just close
my eyes
and the
sadness that missinig you brings
Soon is gone
and this heart of mine sings
Yes I
love you so,
and that for
me is all I need to know
I will wait
for you
till the sun
falls from out of the sky,
for what
else can I do
I will wait
for you,
meditating
how sweet life will be when you come back to me

A letra:
This is the end Beautiful friend
This is the end My only friend, the end
Of our
elaborate plans, the end Of everything that stands, the end No
safety or surprise, the end I'll never look into your
eyes...again
Can you picture what will be So limitless
and free Desperately in need...of some...stranger's hand In
a...desperate land
Lost in a Roman...wilderness of pain And
all the children are insane All the children are insane Waiting
for the summer rain, yeah
There's danger on the edge of town
Ride the King's highway, baby Weird scenes inside the gold
mine Ride the highway west, baby
Ride the snake, ride the
snake To the lake, the ancient lake, baby The snake is long,
seven miles Ride the snake...he's old, and his skin is cold
The
west is the best The west is the best Get here, and we'll do
the rest
The blue bus is callin' us The blue bus is
callin' us Driver, where you taken' us
The killer awoke
before dawn, he put his boots on He took a face from the ancient
gallery And he walked on down the hall He went into the room
where his sister lived, and...then he Paid a visit to his
brother, and then he He walked on down the hall, and And he
came to a door...and he looked inside Father, yes son, I want to
kill you Mother...I want to...fuck you
C'mon baby, take a
chance with us C'mon baby, take a chance with us C'mon baby,
take a chance with us And meet me at the back of the blue bus
Doin' a blue rock On a blue bus Doin' a blue rock C'mon,
yeah
Kill, kill, kill, kill, kill, kill
This is the
end Beautiful friend This is the end My only friend, the
end
It hurts to set you free But you'll never follow me
The end of laughter and soft lies The end of nights we tried
to die

de 1967 no famoso disco Sgt. Peppers, que completou cinquenta anos
ontem.
Paul conta
nome da menina era Melanie Coe. Ela tinha 17 anos na época e fugiu
com o namorado.
Em abril de
1967. McCartmey visitou Brian Wilson em Los Angeles e tocou She's
leaving home pra ele e a esposa no piano. Ambos choraram de emoção.
Ned Rorem disse que She's leaving home é tão linda quanto qualquer
composição que Schubert fez.
Foi
regravada por Harry Nilsson, Richie Havens, Bryan Ferry, Bee Gees, Al
Jarreau, Billy Bragg, Carrie Underwood, Cheap Trick, entre outros.
A letra:
Wednesday
morning at five o'clock as the day begins Silently closing her
bedroom door Leaving the note that she hoped would say more She
goes downstairs to the kitchen clutching her handkerchief Quietly
turning the backdoor key Stepping outside she is free
She
(We gave her most of our lives) Is leaving (Sacrificed most of our
lives) Home (We gave her everything money could buy) She's
leaving home after living alone For so many years (Bye
bye)
Father snores as his wife gets into her dressing
gown Picks up the letter that's lying there Standing alone at
the top of the stairs She breaks down and cries to her husband
"Daddy our baby's gone Why would she treat us so
thoughtlessly? How could she do this to me?"
She (We
never thought of ourselves) Is leaving (Never a thought for
ourselves) Home (We struggled hard all our lives to get by) She's
leaving home after living alone For so many years (Bye
bye)
Friday morning at nine o'clock she is far away Waiting
to keep the appointment she made Meeting a man from the motor
trade
She (What did we do that was wrong) Is having (We
didn't know it was wrong) Fun (Fun is the one thing that money
can't buy) Something inside that was always denied For so many
years (Bye bye)
Columbia Records.
então namorada do escultor Armand Vaillanbcourt.
Suzanne
convidou-o pra visitá-la no apartamento dela perto do Velho Porto em
Montréal, onde ela serviu chá e eles saíam pra andar no Velho
A letra:
Suzanne takes
you down to her place near the river You can hear the boats go by
You can spend the night beside her And you know that she's
half crazy But that's why you want to be there And she feeds
you tea and oranges That come all the way from China And just
when you mean to tell her That you have no love to give her Then
she gets you on her wavelength And she lets the river answer
That you've always been her lover And you want to travel with
her And you want to travel blind And you know that she will
trust you For you've touched her perfect body with your mind.
And Jesus was a sailor When he walked upon the water And
he spent a long time watching From his lonely wooden tower And
when he knew for certain Only drowning men could see him He
said "All men will be sailors then Until the sea shall free
them" But he himself was broken Long before the sky
would open Forsaken, almost human He sank beneath your wisdom
like a stone And you want to travel with him And you want to
travel blind And you think maybe you'll trust him For he's
touched your perfect body with his mind.
Now Suzanne takes
your hand And she leads you to the river She is wearing rags
and feathers From Salvation Army counters And the sun pours
down like honey On our lady of the harbour And she shows you
where to look Among the garbage and the flowers There are
heroes in the seaweed There are children in the morning They
are leaning out for love And they will lean that way forever
While Suzanne holds the mirror And you want to travel with
her And you want to travel blind And you know that you can
trust her For she's touched your perfect body with her mind.
A canção
Michael
Nesmith tocou guitarra solo, Peter Tork piano e Micky Dolenz fez
backing vocals.
Davy Jones gravou a canção chateado.
A letra:
Oh, I could
hide 'neath the wings Of the bluebird as she sings. The six
o'clock alarm would never ring. But it rings and I rise, Wipe
the sleep out of my eyes. My shavin' razor's cold and it
stings.
Cheer up, Sleepy Jean. Oh, what can it mean. To
a daydream believer And a homecoming queen.
You once
thought of me As a white knight on a steed. Now you know how
happy I can be. Oh, and our good times starts and end Without
dollar one to spend. But how much, baby, do we really need.
Cheer
up, Sleepy Jean. Oh, what can it mean. To a daydream
believer And a homecoming queen. Cheer up, Sleepy Jean. Oh,
what can it mean. To a daydream believer And a homecoming
queen.
[Instrumental interlude]
Cheer up, Sleepy
Jean. Oh, what can it mean. To a daydream believer And a
homecoming queen. [Repeat and fade]
Paul gravou
uma versão demo em 6 de setembro de 1967. As gravações dela
Paul cantou,
tocou piano, violão, baixo e apito. John tocou harpa e gaita. George
Harrison tocou gaita e violão. Ringo tocou bateria e maracas.
Christopher Taylor, Richard Taylor e Jack Ellory tocaram flauta.
Além de
Sérgio Mendes, foi tambem regravada por Bobby Gentry, The Four Tops,
Petula Clark, Shirley Bassey, Sarah Vaughan, John Paul Young, Aretha
Franklin, Eurythmics, entre outros.
A letra:
Day after day,
alone on the hill The man with the foolish grin is keeping
perfectly still But nobody wants to know him They can see that
he's just a fool And he never gives an answer
But the fool
on the hill Sees the sun going down And the eyes in his
head See the world spinning around
Well on the way, head in
a cloud The man of a thousand voices talking perfectly loud But
nobody ever hears him Or the sound he appears to make And he
never seems to notice
But the fool on the hill Sees the sun
going down And the eyes in his head See the world spinning
around
And nobody seems to like him They can tell what he
wants to do And he never shows his feelings
But the fool on
the hill Sees the sun going down And the eyes in his head See
the world spinning around
He never listens to them He knows
that they're the fools They don't like him
The fool on the
hill Sees the sun going down And the eyes in his head See
the world spinning around
que tinha She has funny cars como Lado B.
Foi gravada
incialmente por The Great Society, onde Darby Slick era o
guitarrista.
A banda The Great
Somebody to love gravada pelo Jefferson
Somebody to
San Francisco.
Grace Slick
cantou. Marty Balin tocou pandeiro e fez backing vocals. Jorma
Kaukonen tocou guitarra solo. Paul Kantner tocou guitarra ritmica.
Jack Casady tocou baixo e Spencer Dryden tocou bateria.
A letra:
When the truth is found To
be lies And all the joy Within you dies
Don't you want
somebody to love? Don't you need somebody to love? Wouldn't you
love somebody to love? You better find somebody to love Love
When
the garden flowers Baby, are dead, yes And your mind, your
mind Is so full of red
Don't you want somebody to
love? Don't you need somebody to love? Wouldn't you love
somebody to love? You better find somebody to love
Your
eyes, I say your eyes May look like his Yeah, but in your head,
baby I'm afraid you don't know where it is
Don't you want
somebody to love? Don't you need somebody to love? Wouldn't you
love somebody to love? You better find somebody to love
Tears
are running They're all running down your breast And your
friends, baby They treat you like a guest
Don't you want
somebody to love? Don't you need somebody to love? Wouldn't you
love somebody to love? You better find somebody to love
