585 – Peter and Gordon – Woman (1966)

Escrita por Paul McCartney, sob o pseudonimo de Bruce Webb, para ver se tinha sucesso sem a assinatura Lennon/McCartney. Foi gravada em 1965 por Peter and Gordon, e lançada em 10 de janeiro de 1966 no Reino Unido.

Sob a gloriosa Lennon/McCartney assinatura, Paul escrevera 3 hits de Peter and Gordon. A world without love, Nobody I know e I don't want to see you again. Chegou ao número 28 nos charts britânicos e número 14 nos Estados Unidos.

Mesmo que Peter and Gordon tenham tido hits maiores, Gordon disse que essa foi a melhor canção que gravaram e sua favorita.

Como Lennon fez uma música em 1980 chamada Woman, foi a única vez que Paul e John fizeram uma música com o mesmo nome, em carreira solo.

584 – Manfred Mann – Pretty Flamingo (1966)

Escrita por Mark Barkan, foi gravada pelo Manfred Mann no Abbey Road Studios, em Londres, no início de 1966 e lançada em 15 de abril de 1966 num compacto que tinha You're standing by no Lado B. Chegou ao número 1 nos charts britânico logo em 5 de maio de 1966.

Nos charts pop americanos, só chegou ao número 29, e 6 de agosto de 1966. Na Irlanda, chegou ao número 1, colocando Paint it black dos Stones em segundo. Chegou ao número 2 no Canadá, número 12 na Alemanha, número 15 Holanda, número 3 na Noruega e número 6 na Suécia.

O alto-falante descreve uma mulher, que todos os homens chamam de flamingo, porque o cabelo dela brilha como o sol e seus olhos podem iluminar o céu. Essa mulher, fez o cantor se apaixonar por la e os planos dele são ganhar o afeto dela.

A gravação conta com o baixista do Cream, Jack Bruce, que por pouco tempo esteve na banda em 1965.

Escrita por Jimmy Work. Foi inicialmente gravada por Kitty Wells, em 1955 e foi regravada por inúmeros artistas como Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Wanda Jackson, Connie Francis, Ray Charles, Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris, Skeeter Davis e a nossa escolhida, a versão de Willie Nelson.

A canção é uma balada melancolica sobre não esquecer um antigo amor. O cantor sonha que eles são ainda amantes, mesmo sabendo que ela nunca será dele novamente.

580 – Question Mark and The Mysterians – 96 Tears (1966)

Escrita por Rudy Martinez, foi lançada em agosto de 1966 pelo Question Mark and The Mysterians, em um compacto que tinha Midnight hour no Lado B. Em Outubro de 1966, chegou ao número 1 dos charts pop americanos e número 1 no Canadá. Billboard colocou-a como a canção de número 5 do ano de 1966. É a canção de número 213 do ranking da revista Rolling Stone das 500 maiores canções de todos os tempos. Recebeu disco de ouro em 11 de novembro de 1966.

Question Mark era o nome artistico de Rudy Martinez. Ele escreveu-a em 1962 na sala do manager dele. O primeiro nome foi Too many teardrops e depois virou 69 tears. Mudaram pra 96 tears com medo das rádios não tocarem a canção pela alusão sexual. Gravaram-a em Bat City, Michigan.

Ficou conhecida pelos licks de órgão e as letras secas. É conhecida como um dos primeiros hits das bandas de garagens e é uma das canção que deram início ao movimento punk.

Question Mark cantou, Frank Rodriguez tocou o órgão Vox Continental, Bobby Balderrama tocou guitarra solo, Frank Lugo tocou baixo e Eddie Serrato tocou bateria.

Escrita por Paul Simon, foi lançada por ele ainda em 1965, no seu disco The Paul Simon Songbook. Porém, a versão escolhida aqui é a versão que ele gravou com Garfunkel, no disco Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme. Foi gravada em 13 de junho de 1966, e lançada em 10 de outubro de 1966.

Desultory signifca falta de plano ou um fraco esforço, um performance desapontante. Phillic é um discurso feroz, ou uma tirada, pra condenar alguém.

Escrita por John Sebastian, Mark Sebastian e Steve Boone, foi lançada em 4 de junho de 1966, no compacto que tinha Butchie's tune no Lado B.

Chegou ao número 1 dos charts pop americanos em agosto de 1966 e ficou lá por 3 semanas consecutivas. A canção tem uma série de buzinas de carro durante a parte instrumental, começando com uma buzina de fusca e terminando com um barulho de uma furadeira, pra dar a impressão de um verão na cidade, onde os carros circulam mais e os trabalhos não param.

Recebeu disco de ouro e é a canção de número 401 do ranking da Rolling Stone Magazine das 500 maiores canções de todos os tempos.

A parte do teclado é um Hohner Pianet, que ficou bem característico do som dessa época. O órgão é um Vox Continental.

Além de número 1 nos charts pop americanos, tambem chegou a numero 11 na Australia, número 1 no Canadá, número 2 na Holanda, número 1 na Finlândia, número 3 na Nova Zelândia, número 3 na Irlanda e número 8 no Reino Unido.

576 – Frank Sinatra – Strangers in the night (1966)

Escrita por Bert Kaempfert, Charles Singleton e Eddie Snyder, foi gravada por Frank Sinatra em 11 de abril de 1966 e lançada em maio de 1966 no disco Strangers in the night. Foi também gravada por Connie Francis em 1967.

Antes de ser dada pra Sinatra, foi dada pra Melina Mercouri, que declinou a canção, passando pra Sinatra. A versão de Sinatra chegou ao número 1 nos charts pop americanos. Esse disco se tornou o maior sucesso de Sinatra, em toda sua carreira. Chegou ao número 1 dos charts britânicos. A canção ganhou 3 Grammies pra Sinatra em 1967, assim como disco de ouro.

Hal Blaine tocou bateria na gravação e Glen Campbell tocou guitarra ritmica. Sinatra nunca gostou da canção e sempre a chamava de “piece of shit”.

O próprio Tim Hardin gravou uma versão em 1967. Tim Hardin tocou-a no festival de Woodstock, em 1969.
