613 – The Beatles – I am the walrus (1967)

Escrita por John Lennon, mas creditada à dupla Lennon/McCartney, foi gravada em 5 de setembro de 1967 e lançada em 24 de novembro de 1967 num compacto que tinha Hello Goodbye como Lado A.

A ideia da canção se deu quando John recebeu uma carta de um pupilo da Quarry bank High School, onde ele houvera estudado. O sujeito dizia que o professor estava colocando uma tarefa para analisar as letras dos Beatles. John respondeu a carta dizendo que o professor estava dando uma tarefa muito dificil e que iria escrever uma canção pra dificultar mais ainda. Foi quando ele escreveu I am the walrus.

I am the walrus foi a primeira música que eles gravaram após a morte do manager deles, Brian Epstein. George Martin regeu a orquestra com Violinos, cellos, cornetas e clarinetes. Um coral de 16 vozes tambem foi contratado. O nome deles era The Mike Sammes Singers.

John cantou, fez backing vocals, tocou piano elétrico e mellotron. Paul tocou baixo, pandeiro e fez backing vocals. George Harrison tocou guitarra eletrica e fez backing vocals. Ringo tocou bateria.

Foi regravada pelo Oasis, Oingo Boingo, entre outros artistas.
