497 – Wilson Pickett – In the midnight hour (1965)

Escrita por Wilson Pickett e Steve Cropper, foi lançada por Wilson Pickett em 1965. Foi escrita no famoso Lorraine Motel, em Memphis, onde Martin Luther King Jr. seria assassinadoem abril de 1968. Foi o primeiro hit de Pickett na Atlantic Records. Chegou ao número 1 nos charts de R&B e número 21 nos charts pop americanos.

Foi gravada em 12 de maio de 1965 nos Stax Studios, em Memphis, Steve Cropper era um guitarrista da Atlantic. A idéia de usar In the midnight hour como título e idéia da música veio de Cropper. Além de Cropper, a banda tinha Al Jackson na bateria e Donald Dunn no baixo. Jax Wexler, um dos donos da Atlantic foi o responsavel pela inovação de usar um backbeat atrasado. É tambem o número 134 na lista da revista Rolling Stone das 500 maiores canções de todos os tempos. É também uma das 500 canções que deram forma ao rock and roll.

Foi regravada pelas Mirettes e chegaram ao número 18 dos charts de R&B em 1968 e número 45 nos charts pop americanos. Cross Country reagravou-a em 1973. Razzy Bailey regravou-a em 1984. The Jam gravou-a em 1977. The Righteous Brothers em 1966, Johnny Rivers em 1966, James Taylor em 2008, Them em 1970, Tina Tirner em 1988, The Young Rascals em 1966, entre outros.
