A canção usa a frase Carefree Highway como uma metáfora pra um estado mental onde o cantor procura escapar de suas ruminações sobre um romance com uma mulher chamada Ann. Ele diz que Ann foi uma mulher real, que se relacionou com ele quando o mesmo tinha 22 anos. Disse que ela o deiou completamente apaionado e foi embora, seguiu o caminho dela.
