281 – Gene Chandler – Duke of Earl (1962)

Escrita por Gene Chandler, Earl Edwards e Bernice Williams, foi lançada em 13 de janeiro de 1962 pelo selo Vee-Jay Records, num compacto que tinha Kissing in the kitchen como Lado B. chegou ao número 1 dos charts pop americanos na gravacão de Gene Chandler. Se tornou a mais conhecida canção de Chandler, que mais tarde ficou conhecido como The Duke of Earl.  

Em 2002, a canção entrou pro Grammy Hall of Fame. E foi também selecionada pelo The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame como uma das 500 canções que deram forma ao rock and roll. 

A canção se originou dos exercícios de aquecimento vocal dos Dukays, um grupo vocal que tinha Gene Chandler e Earl Edwards. Os Dukays tinham um certo sucesso já nos charts de R&B. o grupo se aquecia cantando “Do do do do…”, em tons diferentes. 

Em uma ocasião, Chandler mudou as silabas que estava cantando pra incluir o nome do amigo Earl e cantou gradualmente palavras sem sentido até chegar ao “Du, du, du… duke of Earl”. Os dois então trabalharam a canção com o mentor deles e compositor Bernice Williams e eles gravaram a canção com os membros dos Dukays. 

Entretanto, a gravadora preferiu lançar outra canção, chamada Nite Owl, deixando Gene Chandler com a permissão de lançar Duke of Earl como artista solo. 

Wayne Fontana and The Mindbenders lançaram uma versão cover em 1964. Os Darts lançaram em 1979, chegando ao número 6 dos charts britânicos. 

Sha na na tocou-a ao vivo em Woodstock, em 1969. Daddy Cool gravou-a em 1973. Cornell Campbell gravou em reggae em 1975. Youth Brigade gravou em 1983. 

Também foi gravada pelos Nylons, Four Tops, New Edition, Te Barron Knights and The Van-Dells.

Escrita por Gerry Goffin e Carole King, foi gravada pelos Crickets e chegou ao número 5 no Reino Unido. Essa é a nossa versão. 

Os Beatles tocaram uma versão dessas canção na BBC, no show Pop go the Beatles, que foi lançada no disco Live at the BBC, em 1994. 

Foi gravada em primeiro de agosto de 1963, e foi ao ar em 27 de agosto de 1963. Foi um raro dueto entre Paul McCartney e George Harrison. 

Foi regravada por Brinsley Schwars em 1973, Bryan Ferry em 1973 e por Mud em 1982.

Canção gravada por Ricky Nelson que chegaria ao número 6 dos charts pop americanos. Fala de um cara que fez tudo o que pode pra ficar com a garota, mas agora é com ela. Ele não pode fazer mais nada. 

Pede pra ela se resolver e fazer o que tem que fazer, afinal ela sabe como ele se sente e agora é com ela. Ele diz que está claro que ele daria tudo o que tem pra que ela fique perto dele e nunca o deixe sozinho.

Escrita por Del Shannon e Maron Mackenzie, chegou ao número 12 nos charts pop americanos. Depois Runaway que foi número 1, Hats off to Larry, que foi número 5, Little town flirt, foi o último hit de Shannon. 

Depois disso, Shannon  não conseguiu mais manter o sucesso nos Estados Unidos, embora mantendo um sucesso enorme no Reino Unido. Inclusive tendo se tornado ídolo de John Lennon. Shannon viria a ser o primeiro americano a gravar um cover dos Beatles, e foi na música From me to you.
