171 – Elvis Presley – Surrender (1961)

Trata-se de uma adaptação feita por Doc Pomus e Mort Shuman de uma canção italiana de 1902, chamada “torna à Surriento”, escrita por Giambattista e Ernesto de Cutis. 

 

Foi gravada por Elvis Presley em 30 de outubro de 1960 e lancada em 7 de fevereiro de 1961, tendo Lonely man como Lado B do compacto simples. 

Chegou ao número 1 dos charts pop americanos e ingleses em 1961 e tornou-se uma das maiores vendagens de compactos de todos os tempos. Foi também numero 2 na Itália e Noruega e numero 6 na Alemanha. É uma das 25 músicas que Pomus e Shuman escreveram pra Elvis.

Escrita por Neil Sedaka e Howard Greenfield, foi gravada em 1959 e lançada em dezembro de 1960 no compacto que tinha The same old fool como Lado B. Chegou ao número 4 dos charts Billboard HOT100. Chegou também ao número 1 no Japão e Canadá, número 3 na Austrália. Número 7 na Nova Zelândia e número 8 no Reino Unido. A letra de Greenfield foi inspirada no filme de mesmo nome e a música de Neil foi inspirada em uma mistura de Traveling man de Ricky Nelson e Personality de Lloyd Price, ambas estão na nossa lista. Al Caiola, Buck Pizzarelli, Art Ryerson e Bill Suyker tocaram guitarra. George Duvivier tocou baixo. Ernie Hayes tocou piano. Jerome Richardson tocou sax. David Panama Francis tocou bateria. Foi a primeira vez na carreira de Neil que ele chegou à um TOP 5. Foi regravada por Petula Clark (Em francês), The Beach Boys, Eliana (Em português), entre outros artistas.

169 – Gary U.S. Bonds – Quarter to three (1961)

Trata-se de uma canção popular, adaptada e acrescida da musica A night with Daddy G – Part I, uma musica instrumental dos Church Street Five, que foi escrita por Gene Barge, Frank Guida e Joseph Royster. Foi gravada por Gary U.S. Bonds e lancada em maio de 1961.
 

Essa gravação chegou ao número 1 dos charts pop americanos em 26 de junho de 1961. Os arranjos vocais foram de Anderson, o nome de nascimento de Gary U.S. Bonds. A qualidade de gravação é péssima, mas o produtor Frank Guida continuou pra sempre dizendo que conseguiu justamente o som que queria e que a aparente baixa qualidade foi desejada por ele. 

Chegou também ao número 11 dos charts ingleses em 2 de setembro de 1961. Bruce Springsteen sempre tocava essa canção no bis de seus shows. Inclusive aparece no seu Hammersmith Odeon London 75. 

É uma das 500 canções que deram forma ao rock and roll, eleita pelo Rock and Roll Hall of fame.

168 – Ricky Nelson – Travelling man (1961)

Escrita por Jerry Fueller, se tornou um dos grandes clássicos da carreira de Ricky Nelson. Era o lado A do compacto que trazia outro clássico do cantor, Hello, Mary Lou. Lancada em 1961 pela Imperial Records, a canção chegou ao número 1 dos charts pop americanos.   

 

O enredo da canção é a de um viajante, que tem uma “Pretty señorita” no México, uma esquimó no Alasca, uma fraulein em Berlim, uma boneca chinesa em Hong King e uma polinésia em Waikiki e como disse, tinham outras, pelo menos uma em cada porto. 

O produtor foi Joe Johnson, que ficou famoso por produzir o clássico Tequila, dos Champs. Joe tinha um estúdio de gravação em Nashville. 

Em 1982, Jacky Ward regravou a canção, chegando ao número 32 dos charts country americanos.

167 – Andy Williams – Moon River (1961)

Escrita por Henry Mancini e Johnny Mercer, foi gravada inicialmente por Audrey Hepburn, ganhando um Oscar em 1962 pela melhor canção original, no filme Breakfest at Tiffany’s. o que rendeu também um Grammy em 1962 como a melhor gravação do ano. 

 

Como se pode ver, foi muito bem recebida pela crítica essa gravação de Hepburn. Porem, a gravação que escolhi pra fazer parte dessa lista foi feita por Andy Williams. 

Andy Williams gravou-a em 1961 e foi o cantor da canção na apresentação do Oscar de 1962. A versão de Williams nunca entrou nos charts, mas vendeu mais de um milhão de copias ainda em 1963. O letrista Johnny Mercer estava no ostracismo, pois no meio dos anos 1950s ele deixou de compor devido ao surgimento do rock and roll, que ele não gostava. Com o sucesso de Moon River, ele entrou de novo no sistema de composição. 

Jerry Butler também regravou essa canção, chegando ao número 11 dos charts pop americanos. Danny Williams também gravou-a na Africa do Sul, que chegou ao número 1 dos charts britânicos. Aretha Franklin também regravou-a, assim como Pat Boone, Paul Anka, Louis Armstrong, Bobby Vinton, Sarah Brightman, Perry Cuomo, Ben E. King, Ray Conniff, Bobby Darin, Connie Francis, Judy Garland, Trini Lopez, Johnny Matis, The Three Tenors, Morrisey, Willie Nelson, R.E.M., Frank Sinatra, Rod Stewart, Barbra Streisend, Sarah Vaughan, entre outros. 

Moon river também foi tocada no filme Born on the fourth of July.
