Escrita por Don McLean, foi gravada inicialmente por ele em junho de 1969 e lançada no disco Tapestry, o seu disco de estréia, em outubro de 1970. Também regravada por Shirley Bassey em 1972. Foi gravada depois por Perry Como, em 1973. A nossa versão no entanto é a de Elvis Presley, gravada por Elvis em 11 de março de 1975, no estúdio C da RCA em Hollywood, California. Foi lançada no disco Today, em 7 de maio de 1975. Elvis iria cantá-la ao vivo em quase todo show que fez até sua morte. Glen Campbel iria gravá-la em 1999. Rick Astley gravou-a em 2005. Outras gravações foram feitas por Bobby Goldsboro, Emmylou Harris, Johnny Mathis, Olivia-Newton John (Que faleceu ontem) e Bobby Vinton, entre outros artistas.
