492 – Johnny Rivers – Where have all the flowers gone? (1965)

Escrita por Peter Seeger e Joe Hickson. Os três primeiros versos e a melodia foram feitos por Peter Seeger em 1955. Joe Hickerson adicionou mais versos em maio de 1960. Peter Seeger lançou em 1964 novamente e com essa gravação, ganhou um Grammy em 2002.

Peter Seeger encontrou inspiração pra essa canção em outubro de 1955, quando estava em um avião indo pra um show no Oberlin College, um dos poucos lugares que o contratava durante a Era McCarthy.

Ele estava olhando seu caderno e viu os versos: “Where are the flowers, the girls have plucked them. Where are the girls, they've all taken husbands. Where are the men, they're all in the army”. Essas frases foram tiradas de uma canção russa.

Foi regravada pelos Kingston Trio em 1961, Peter, Paul and Mary em 1962, Marlene Dietrich em 1962, The Searchers em 1963, Bobby Darin em 1963, Roy Orbison, The Four Seasons em 1964, Joan Baez em 1965, Johnny Rivers em 1965 e foi essa a versão que escolhemos na nossa lista.

Harry Belfonte gravou em 1966, Eart, wind and fire gravou em 1972, Richie Havens em 1972, Olivia Newton John em 2004, Dolly Parton em 2005, Chris de Burgh em 2008, entre tantos outros.
