John Lennon mas creditada à dupla Lennon/McCartney, I’ll cry instead foi
gravada em primeiro de junho de 1964, nos estúdios da EMI em Londres, o famoso
Abbey Road. Foi lançada em 10 de julho de 1964 no disco A hard day’s night. Foi
também lançada como compacto em 20 de agosto de 1964, que como Lad B I’m happy
just to dance with you.
A ex-esposa
de Lennon, Cynthia, descreve essa música como um pedido de socorro. Ela disse
que isso refletia a frustração que John sentia naquele tempo. Ele era um ídolo
de milhões mas a liberdade e a graça do começo havia acabado. O próprio Lennon
diria mais tarde que a frase “A chip on my shoulder that’s bigger than my feet”
era uma indicação precisa dos seus sentimentos naquele tempo.
John fez os
vocais, tocou violões e pandeiro. Paul tocou baixo, George Harrison guitarra
solo e Ringo bateria.
Essa
gravação chegou ao numero 25 dos charts pop americanos.
Foi
regravada por Joe Cocker, em 1964, Johnny Rivers em 1965, Billy Joel em 1983,
Chet Atkins em 1966, entre outros artistas.
