Curiosamente,
instrumento.
O tema da
canção foi sugerido por Andy Warhol. Andy perguntou, porque vocês
não fazem uma canção sobre a paranoia? Lou Reed achou boa a ideia
e veio com a frase: “Watch out, the world's behind you, there's
Lou Reed
cantou e tocou guitarra solo. John Cale, como dito, tocou celesta,
viola e piano. Sterling Morrison tocou baixo. Maureen Tucker tocou
percussão e Nico fez os backing vocals.
Foi
regravada por Beck, Nick Cave, Nina Hagen, Belle and Sebastian, The
Undertones, Billy Bragg e muitos outros artistas.
A letra:
Sunday morning,
praise the dawning It's just a restless feeling by my side Early
dawning, Sunday morning It's just the wasted years so close
behind Watch out, the world's behind you There's always someone
around you who will call It's nothing at all Sunday morning and
I'm falling I've got a feeling I don't want to know Early
dawning, Sunday morning It's all the streets you crossed, not so
long ago Watch out, the world's behind you There's always
someone around you who will call It's nothing at all Watch out,
the world's behind you There's always someone around you who will
call It's nothing at all Sunday morning, Sunday morning, Sunday
morning
Substitute
foi inspirada na música The tracks of my tears, dos Miracles, de
1965. Pete Townshend ficou obcecado pela frase “Although she may be
cute, she's just a substitute”. Ficou então com vontade de criar
uma canção ao redor da palavra substitute.
No compacto
americano, a frase do refrão “I look all white but my dad was
black” foi trocada por “I try walking forward but my feet walk
back”. Substitute e I can't explain tem sido frequente nos shows da
banda como música de abertura desde 1971.
Foi
regravada pelos Ramones, Sex Pistols, Blur e outros artistas.
A letra:
You think we
look pretty good together You think my shoes are made of
leather
But I'm a substitute for another guy I look pretty
tall but my heels are high The simple things you see are all
complicated I look pretty young, but I'm just back-dated,
yeah
Substitute your lies for fact I can see right through
your plastic mac I look all white, but my dad was black My
fine-looking suit is really made out of sack
I was born with a
plastic spoon in my mouth The north side of my town faced east,
and the east was facing south And now you dare to look me in the
eye Those crocodile tears are what you cry It's a genuine
problem, you won't try To work it out at all you just pass it by,
pass it by
Substitute me for him Substitute my coke for
gin Substitute you for my mum At least I'll get my washing
done
But I'm a substitute for another guy I look pretty
tall but my heels are high The simple things you see are all
complicated I look pretty young, but I'm just backdated, yeah
I
was born with a plastic spoon in my mouth The north side of my
town faced east, and the east was facing south And now you dare to
look me in the eye Those crocodile tears are what you cry It's
a genuine problem, you won't try To work it out at all you just
pass it by, pass it by
Substitute me for him Substitute my
coke for gin Substitute you for my mum At least I'll get my
washing done
Substitute your lies for fact I can see right
through your plastic mac I look all white, but my dad was black My
fine-looking suit is really made out of sack
I'll come running como Lado B. Foi produzida por Jeff Barry e Ellie
Greenwich.
A revista
The Sound of Silence, e tocaria em Brown Eyed girl e I'm a believer
A letra:
Baby loves me, yes, yes
she does Ah, the girl's outta sight, yeah Says she loves me,
yes, yes she does Mmm, gonna show me tonight, yeah

baby She got the way to move me (She got the way to groove
me)
No, we won't tell a soul where we gone to Girl, we do
whatever we want to Ah, I love the way that you do me Cherry,

Hey, she got the way to move

1966, em New York City.
compacto que tinha (I'm not your) Steppin' Stone como Lado B. O vocal
número 1 no Reino Unido, Australia, Canadá e Irlanda.
gravado The Sound of Silence e depois gravaria Brown eyed girl e que
havia trabalhado com Diamond em Cherry cherry. O outro guitarrista
foi Sal Ditroia. No baixo, Dick Romoff, Artie Butler no órgão, Jeff
Barry no piano e pandeiro e Buddy Saltzman na bateria. A gravação é
A letra:
I thought love
was only true in fairy tales Meant for someone else but not for
me. Love was out to get me That's the way it
seemed. Disappointment haunted all my dreams.
Then I saw
her face, now I'm a believer Not a trace of doubt in my mind. I'm
in love, I'm a believer! I couldn't leave her if I tried.
I
thought love was more or less a given thing, Seems the more I gave
the less I got. What's the use in tryin'? All you get is
pain. When I needed sunshine I got rain.
Then I saw her
face, now I'm a believer Not a trace of doubt in my mind. I'm
in love, I'm a believer! I couldn't leave her if I tried.
Love
was out to get me Well that's the way it seemed Dissapointment
haunted all my dreams
But then I saw her face, now I'm a
believer Not a trace of doubt in my mind. I'm in love, I'm a
believer! I couldn't leave her if I tried.
I'm a believer,
I'm a believer yeah yeah

Escrita
Building. As duas primeiras foram We gotta get out of this place, de
1965 e It's my life, do mesmo ano.
O arranjo
Don't bring me down foi um grande hit,
A letra:
When you
complain, and criticize I feel I'm nothing in your eyes It
makes me feel like giving up Because my best just ain't good
enough
Girl I want to provide for you And do all the things
you want me to
Oh, oh no, don't bring me down I'm begin'
you darlin' Oh, oh no, don't bring me down
Sacrifices how
we make I'm ready to give, as well as take One thing I need is
your respect One thing I can't take is your neglect
Woman
anything I need your love And troubles are easy to rise above
Oh,
oh no Don't bring me down Oh no, no, no Oh, oh no Don't
bring me down
You complain, and criticize I feel I'm
nothing in your eyes It makes me feel like giving up Because my
best just ain't good enough
Girl I want to provide for you And
do all the things you want me to
Oh, oh no, don't bring me
down No, no, no, no, no I'm Beggin' Oh, oh no, don't bring
me down
auto-falante do órgão Hammond.
chamado A experiencia psicodelica: A manuel baseado no livro tibetano
dos mortos. John comprou o livro, foi pra casa, tomou LSD e seguiu as
tape loops. George Martin tocou piano.
Foi
regravada por Jimmi Hendrix, Phill Collins, The Grateful Dead, Living
colour, David Lee Roth, Dave Matthews, Oasis, entre outros.
A letra:
Turn off your mind, relax and float
down stream It is not dying, it is not dying
Lay down all
thoughts, surrender to the void It is shining, it is shining
Yet
you may see the meaning of within It is being, it is being
Love
is all and love is everyone It is knowing, it is knowing...
...
that ignorance and hates may mourn the dead It is believing, it is
believing
But listen to the colour of your dreams It is not
living, it is not living
So play the game "Existence"
to the end... ... Of the beginning, of the beginning Of the
beginning, of the beginning Of the beginning, of the beginning Of
the beginning, of the beginning
A letra:
Do I have to come right
out and say it? Tell you that you look so fine Do I have to
come right out and ask you to be mine?
If it was a game I
could play it Tryin' to make it but I'm losin' time I got to
bring you in, you're overworkin' my mind
Indecision is
crowding me I have no room to spare And I can't believe she'd
care Like a dream she has taken me And now I don't know
where And a part of me is scared The part of me I shared Once
before
Do I have to come right out and say it? Tell you
that you look so fine (Look so fine) Do I have to come right out
and ask you to be mine?
Indecision is crowding me I have no
room to spare And I can't believe she'd care Like a dream she
has taken me And now I don't know where And a part of me is
scared The part of me I shared Once before
Do I have to
come right out and say it, girl? Tell you that you look so fine
(Look so fine) Do I have to come right out and ask you to be
mine?
If it was a game I could play it Tryin' to make it
but I'm losin' time (Losin' time) I got to bring you in, you're
overworkin' my mind
Do I have to come right out and say it,
girl? Tell you that you look so fine (Look so fine)
Lado B.
A influencia
A letra fala
Tambem relembrou
o titulo dos Beatles, Eight days a week.
Eles falam:
Rain grey town, known for its sound, ou seja, cidade cinza chuvosa,
charts americanos. Outra referencia foi Nowhere is there warmth to be
found, among those afraid of losing their ground, uma referencia a
banda.
Em 1999,
recebeu um Grammy. É o número 151 da lista da revista Rolling Stone
das 500 maiores canções de todos os tempos. Q Magazine colocou-a
banda.
Foi
regravada pelos Ventures, Emerson, Lake and Palmer, Crowded House,
Roger McGuinn,
A letra:
Eight miles
high and when you touch down You'll find that it's stranger than
known Signs in the street that say where you're going Are
somewhere just being their own
Nowhere is there warmth to be
found Among those afraid of losing their ground Rain gray town
known for its sound In places small faces unbound
Round the
squares huddled in storms Some laughing some just shapeless
forms Sidewalk scenes and black limousines Some living, some
standing alone
refletir completamente a música clássica indiana. Teve a
indiana. Love you to entrou como a quarta música do disco Revolver,
que iniciaria a segunda fase dos Beatles.
A gravação
teve George Harrison cantando e fazendo backing vocals, tocando
violão, cítara, guitarra ritmica e guitarra solo. Paul fez backing
vocal e Ringo tocou pandeiro. Anil Bhagwat tocou tabla e músicos do
Asian Music Circle tocaram cítara e tambura.
A letra:
Each day just
goes so fast I turn around, it's past You don't get time to
hang a sign on me
Love me while you can Before I'm a dead
old man
A lifetime is so short A new one can't be
bought But what you've got means such a lot to me
Make love
all day long Make love singing songs
Make love all day
long Make love singing songs
There's people standing
round Who'll screw you in the ground They'll fill you in with
all their sins, you'll see
Paul Simon
Chegou a
27 nos charts canadenses.
Foi
regravada por Joan Baez e ela mudou a frase Is the theater really
dead por is the church really dead.
A letra:
It's a still life water
color, Of a now late afternoon, As the sun shines through the
curtained lace And shadows wash the room. And we sit and drink
our coffee Couched in our indifference, Like shells upon the
shore You can hear the ocean roar In the dangling
conversation And the superficial sighs, The borders of our
lives.
And you read your Emily Dickinson, And I my Robert
Frost, And we note our place with bookmarkers That measure what
we've lost. Like a poem poorly written We are verses out of
rhythm, Couplets out of rhyme, In syncopated time And the
dangled conversation And the superficial sighs, Are the borders
of our lives.
Yes, we speak of things that matter, With
words that must be said, "Can analysis be worthwhile?" "Is
the theater really dead?" And how the room is softly
faded And I only kiss your shadow, I cannot feel your
hand, You're a stranger now unto me Lost in the dangling
conversation. And the superficial sighs, In the borders of our
lives.
e folk rock. Donovan tocou violão, tambura e cantou. Jimmy Page e
Eric Ford tocaram guitarra elétrica. John Cameron tocou harpsichord
e fez os arranjos. Spike Heatley tocou baixo. Bobby Orr tocou
bateria. Tony Carr percussão e John Paul Jones tocou baixo.
J.J. Cale
regravou-a com sua banda Leathercoated Minds, em 1967.
A letra:
Sunshine came softly
a-through my a-window today Could've tripped out easy a-but I've
a-changed my ways It'll take time, I know it but in a while You're
gonna be mine, I know it, we'll do it in style 'Cause I made my
mind up you're going to be mine
I'll tell you right now Any
trick in the book a-now, baby, all that I can find
Everybody's
hustlin' a-just to have a little scene When I say we'll be cool, I
think that you know what I mean We stood on a beach at sunset, do
you remember when? I know a beach where, baby, a-it never
ends When you've made your mind up forever to be mine
Hmm,
hmm, hmm, hmm, hmm I'll pick up your hand and slowly blow your
little mind 'Cause I made my mind up you're going to be mine I'll
tell you right now Any trick in the book a-now, baby, that I can
find
Superman or Green Lantern ain't got a-nothin' on me I
can make like a turtle and dive for your pearls in the sea, yep A-you
you you can just sit there while thinking on your velvet throne 'Bout
all the rainbows a-you can a-have for your own When you’ve made
your mind up, forever to be mine
Hmm, hmm, hmm, hmm, hmm I’ll
pick up your hand and slowly blow your little mind When you’ve
made your mind up, forever to be mine I’ll pick up your hand,
I’ll pick up your hand
A canção
as duas partes. Uma com normal e outra reversa. Uma com fuzz e a
outra sem. George Harrison gastou cinco horas pra conseguir esse
feito.
A música é
Paul tocou
baixo e fez os backing vocals. George Harrison tocou os solos de
guitarra e fez os backing vocals. Ringo tocou bateria.
Foi
regravada pelos Vines pra trilha sonora do filme I am Sam, de 2001.
A letra:
When I wake up early in
the morning Lift my head, I'm still yawning When I'm in the
middle of a dream Stay in bed, float up stream (Float up
stream)
Please, don't wake me, no, don't shake me Leave me
where I am, I'm only sleeping
Everybody seems to think I'm
lazy I don't mind, I think they're crazy Running everywhere at
such a speed Till they find there's no need (There's no
need)
Please, don't spoil my day, I'm miles away And after
all I'm only sleeping
Keeping an eye on the world going by my
window Taking my time
Lying there and staring at the
ceiling Waiting for a sleepy feeling...
Please, don't spoil
my day, I'm miles away And after all I'm only sleeping
Ooh
yeah
Keeping an eye on the world going by my window Taking
my time
When I wake up early in the morning Lift my head,
I'm still yawning When I'm in the middle of a dream Stay in
bed, float up stream (Float up stream)
Please, don't wake me,
no, don't shake me Leave me where I am, I'm only sleeping
Escrita por Neil Young,

número 11 do disco de estréia da banda.
A letra:
Out of my mind And I
just can't take it anymore Left behind By myself and what I'm
living for All I hear are screams from outside the limousines That
are taking me
Out of my mind Through the keyhole in an open
door Happy to find That I don't know what I'm smiling for Tired
of hanging on If you've missed me, I've just gone Cause they're
taking me Out of my mind

maio de 1966 no disco Blonde on Blonde.
Ele tentou novamente
Dylan
escreveu Visions of Johanna quando estava morando no Chelsea Hotel,
A letra:
Ain't it just like the night
to play tricks when you're tryin' to be so quiet ? We sit here
stranded, though we're all doing our best to deny it And Louise
holds a handful of rain, tempting you to defy it Lights flicker
from the opposite loft In this room the heat pipes just cough The
country music station plays soft But there's nothing really
nothing to turn off Just Louise and her lover so entwined And
these visions of Johanna that conquer my mind.
In the empty
lot where the ladies play blindman's bluff with the key chain And
the all-night girls they whisper of escapades out on the D-train We
can hear the night watchman click his flashlight Ask himself if
it's him or them that's really insane Louise she's all right she's
just near She's delicate and seems like the mirror But she just
makes it all too concise and too clear That Johanna's not here The
ghost of electricity howls in the bones of her face Where these
visions of Johanna have now taken my place.
Now, little boy
lost, he takes himself so seriously He brags of his misery, he
likes to live dangerously And when bringing her name up He
speaks of a farewell kiss to me He's sure got a lotta gall to be
so useless and all Muttering small talk at the wall while I'm in
the hall Oh, how can I explain ? It's so hard to get on And
these visions of Johanna they kept me up past the dawn.
Inside
the museums, Infinity goes up on trial Voices echo this is what
salvation must be like after a while But Mona Lisa musta had the
highway blues You can tell by the way she smiles See the
primitive wallflower frieze When the jelly-faced women all
sneeze Hear the one with the mustache say, "Jeeze I can't
find my knees." Oh, jewels and binoculars hang from the head
of the mule But these visions of Johanna, they make it all seem so
cruel.
The peddler now speaks to the countess who's pretending
to care for him Saying, "Name me someone that's not a
parasite and I'll go out and say a prayer for him." But like
Louise always says "Ya can't look at much, can ya man."
As
she, herself prepares for him And Madonna, she still has not
showed We see this empty cage now corrode Where her cape of the
stage once had flowed The fiddler, he now steps to the road He
writes everything's been returned which was owed On the back of
the fish truck that loads While my conscience explodes The
harmonicas play the skeleton keys and the rain And these visions
of Johanna are now all that remain.

A letra
sugere bem a questão da erva maldita. “I took a ride, I didn't know
what I would find there/Another road where maybe I could see some
other kind of mind there/What can I do? Who can I be? When I'm with
you, I want to stay there/If I am true, Iwill never leave and If I
do, I'll know the way there”.
Paul cantou
e tocou baixo. John tocou guitarra ritmica e órgão. George Harrison
tocou guitarra solo. Ringo tocou bateria e pandeiro. Eddie Thornton
tocou trumpete, Ian Hammer tocou trumpet, Les Condon tocou trumpete,
Alan Branscombe tocou sax tenor e Peter Coe tocou sax tenor.
Earth, Wind
and Fire regravou-a em 1978.
regravada tambem por Johnny Hallyday em 1966, Diana Ross and The
Supremes em 1968, Ella Fitzgerald em 1969, The Four Tops em 1969, Tom
Jones, Chicago, Joe Pesci e tantos outros artistas.
A letra:
I was alone, I
took a ride
I didn't know what I would find there
Another road
where maybe I could see another kind of mind there
Ooh, then I
suddenly see you
Ooh, did I tell you I need you
Every single
day of my life
You didn't run, you didn't lie
You knew I
wanted just to hold you
And had you gone you knew in time we'd
meet again
For I had told you
Ooh, you were meant to be
near me
Ooh, and I want you hear me
Say we'll be together every
day
Got to get you into my life
What can I do, what can
I be
When I'm with you I want to stay there
If I'm true I'll
never leave
And if I do I know the way there
Ooh, then I
suddenly see you
Ooh, did I tell you I need you
Every single
day of my life
Got to get you into my life
Got to get you
into my life
I was alone, I took a ride
I didn't know what
I would find there
Another road where maybe I could see another
kind of mind there
Then suddenly I see you
Did I tell you I
need you
Every single day?

A letra:
What a dream I
had Pressed in organdy Clothed in crinoline of smoky
burgundy Softer than the rain I wandered empty streets Down
past the shop displays I heard cathedral bells Tripping down
the alley ways As I walked on
And when you ran to me Your
cheeks flushed with the night We walked on frosted fields Of
juniper and lamplight I held your hand
And when I awoke and
felt you warm and near I kissed your honey hair with my grateful
tears Oh, I love you, girl Oh, I love you

A letra:
Good day
sunshine, good day sunshine, good day sunshine
I need to laugh
and when the sun is out I've got something I can laugh about I
feel good in a special way I'm in love and it's a sunny day
Good
day sunshine, good day sunshine, good day sunshine
We take a
walk, the sun is shining down Burns my feet as they touch the
ground
Good day sunshine, good day sunshine, good day
sunshine
Then we'd lie beneath the shady tree I love her
and she's loving me She feels good, she knows she's looking
fine I'm so proud to know that she is mine.
Good day
sunshine, good day sunshine, good day sunshine Good day sunshine,
good day sunshine, good day sunshine Good day sunshine, good day
sunshine, good day sunshine Good day...

Bus
stop, wet day, she's there, I say "Please, share my
umbrella" Bus stop, bus goes, she stays, love grows Under
my umbrella
All
that summer, we enjoyed it Wind and rain and shine And that
umbrella, we employed it By August, she was mine
Every
mornin', I would see her waiting at the stop Sometimes she'd
shopped and she would show me what she bought All the people
stared as if we were both quite insane Someday my name and hers
are going to be the same
That's
the way the whole thing started Silly but it's true Thinkin' of
a sweet romance Beginning in a queue
Came
the sun, the ice was melting No more sheltering now Nice to
think that that umbrella Led me to a vow
Every
mornin', I would see her waiting at the stop Sometimes she'd
shopped and she would show me what she bought All the people
stared as if we were both quite insane Someday my name and hers
are going to be the same
On
bus stop, wet day, she's there, I say "Please, share my
umbrella" Bus stop, bus goes, she stays, love grows Under
my umbrella
All
that summer, we enjoyed it Wind and rain and shine That
umbrella, we employed it By August, she was mine

A letra:
I didn't mean to treat you
so bad You shouldn't take it so personal I didn't mean to make
you so sad You just happened to be there, that's all When I saw
you say goodbye to your friends and smile I thought that it was
well understood That you'd be comin' back in a little while I
didn't know that you were sayin' goodbye for good.
But sooner
or later one of us must know But you just did what you're supposed
to do Sooner or later one of us must know That I really did try
to get close to you.
I couldn't see what you could show
me Your scarf had kept your mouth well hid I couldn't see how
you could know me But you said you knew me and I believed you
did When you whispered in my ear And asked me if I was leavin'
with you or her I didn't realize just what I did hear I didn't
realize how young you were.
But sooner or later one of us must
know But you just doing what you're supposed to do Sooner or
later one of us must know That I really did try to get close to
you.
I couldn't see when it started snowin' Your voice was
all that I heard I couldn't see where we were goin' But you
said you knew and I took your word And then you told me later as I
apologized That you were just kiddin' me, you weren't really from
the farm And I told you, as you clawed out my eyes That I never
really meant to do you any harm.
But sooner or later one of us
must know But you just did what you're supposed to do Sooner or
later one of us must know That I really did try to get close to
you.
