1579 – Neil Young – Cortez the killer (1975)

Escrita por Neil Young, foi produzida por ele e David Briggs e gravada em 16 de junho de 1974 e em 29 de agosto de 1975 e lançada no disco Zuma, em 10 de novembro de 1975. Foi gravada com a banda Crazy Horse e é o número 39 da revista Guitar Worlds dentre os 100 greatest guitar solos e número 329 da lista da revista Rolling Stone das 500 greatest songs of all time. Neil disse que escreveu essa canção enquanto estudava história na High School, quando morava em Winnipeg. Foi banida da Espanha durante o governo de Franco. O disco Zuma foi relançado após a morte de Franco e a música ganhou o novo título de somente Cortez, sem o killer. É inspirada em Hernán Cortés, um conquistador que conquistou o México para a Espanha no século 16. A música também faz referencia ao rei Asteca Moctezuma II e a conquista espanhola do mundo novo. Em vez de descrever as batalhas de Cortés con os astecas, a letra pula pra uma narrativa em primeira pessoa e pula também séculos e faz referencia à uma mulher sem nome. Fala assim “E eu seu que ela está morandoali/E ela me ama até hoje/I não consigo me lembrar até hoje quando/Ou como eu perdi meu caminho”. Neil tinha se separado da atriz Carrie Snodgress. Inicialmente fala de Cortez e suas armas que buscavam novos lugares pra invadir. Laá nesse novo mundo, morava Montezuma, o rei Asteca, muito rico e sábio mas que tinha sua civilização condenada, apesar dos grandes feitos. Suas piramides foram comentadas na música. Ainda hoje não se consegue construir igual o que eles construiam so com as mãos. Depois de sete minutos e meio, a canção acaba, pois um circuito elétrico caiu e o equipamento de gravação apagou. Perderam a parte instrumental e um último verso. Quando o produtor David Briggs disse isso pra Neil, ele respondeu que nunca havai gostado daquele último verso mesmo e não ligou. Assim, o último verso nunca foi gravado ou identificado oficialmente. Foi regravada ao vivo por Dave Matthews Band, com Warren Haynes, no Central Park, em 2003.
