Black ash from the foundry
Hangs like a hood
But the air is perfumed
By the burning firewood
The seeds are bursting
The spring is a-seeping
Lay down my darling
Love ain't for keeping
Lay down beside me
Love ain't for keeping
Lay down beside me
Love ain't for keeping
Lay down my darling
Love ain't for keeping

A letra:

There's a lady who's sure
All that glitters is gold
And she's buying a stairway to Heaven
When she gets there she knows
If the stores are all closed
With a word she can get what she came for
Oh oh oh oh and she's buying a stairway to Heaven
There's a sign on the wall
But she wants to be sure
'Cause you know sometimes words have two meanings
In a tree by the brook
There's a songbird who sings
Sometimes all of our thoughts are misgiving
Ooh, it makes me wonder
Ooh, it makes me wonder
There's a feeling I get
When I look to the west
And my spirit is crying for leaving
In my thoughts I have seen
Rings of smoke through the trees
And the voices of those who standing looking
Ooh, it makes me wonder
Ooh, it really makes me wonder
And it's whispered that soon, If we all call the tune
Then the piper will lead us to reason
And a new day will dawn
For those who stand long
And the forests will echo with laughter
If there's a bustle in your hedgerow
Don't be alarmed now
It's just a spring clean for the May queen
Yes, there are two paths you can go by
But in the long run
There's still time to change the road you're on
And it makes me wonder
Your head is humming and it won't go
In case you don't know
The piper's calling you to join him
Dear lady, can you hear the wind blow?
And did you know
Your stairway lies on the whispering wind?
And as we wind on down the road
Our shadows taller than our soul
There walks a lady we all know
Who shines white light and wants to show
How everything still turns to gold
And if you listen very hard
The tune will come to you at last
When all are one and one is all
To be a rock and not to roll
And she's buying a stairway to Heaven

A day that broke up your mind
Destroyed your notion of circular time
It's just that demon life has got you in its sway
It's just that demon life has got you in its sway
Ain't flinging tears out on the dusty ground
For all my friends out on the burial ground
Can't stand the feeling getting so brought down
It's just that demon life has got me in its sway
It's just that demon life has got me in its sway
There must be ways to find out
Love is the way they say is really strutting out
Hey, hey, hey now
One day I woke up to find
Right in the bed next to mine
Someone that broke me up with a corner of her smile, yeah
It's just that demon life has got me in its sway
It's just that demon life has got me in its sway
It's just that demon life has got me in its sway
It's just that demon life has got me
It's just that demon life has got me

And maybe when you look too hard, dear boy, you never do become aware.
I guess you never did become aware, dear boy.
When I stepped in, my heart was down and out,
But her love came through and brought me round,
Got me up and about.
I hope you never know, dear boy, how much you missed,
And even when you fall in love, dear boy,
It won't be half as good as this
I hope you never know how much you missed,
Dear boy, how much you missed, dear boy

You can call yourself the human race
You can wear a collar and a tie
One thing you can't hide
Is when you're crippled inside
Well now, you know that your cat
Has nine lives, nine lives to itself
But you only got one
And a dog's life ain't fun
Mamma take a look outside
You can go to church and sing a hymn
You can live a lie until you die
One thing you can't hide
Is when you're crippled inside
Take it [Incomprehensible]
Well now, you know that your cat
Has nine lives, nine lives to itself
But you only got one
And a dog's life ain't fun
Mamma take a look outside
You can go to church and sing a hymn
Judge me by the color of my skin
You can live a lie until you die
One thing you can't hide
Is when you're crippled inside
One thing you can't hide
Is when you're crippled inside
One thing you can't hide
Is when you're crippled inside

1124 – Leonard Cohen – Dress rehearsal rag (1971)

Escrita por Leonard Cohen, foi gravada em setembro de 1970 e lançada no disco Songs of Love and Hate, em 19 de março de 1971. Foi gravada anteriormente por Judy Collins, em 1966. Cohen disse que gravou-a e nunca mais iria cantá-la.

A letra:

Four o'clock in the afternoon
And I didn't feel like very much.
I said to myself, "Where are you golden boy,
Where is your famous golden touch?"
I thought you knew where
All of the elephants lie down,
I thought you were the crown prince
Of all the wheels in Ivory Town.
Just take a look at your body now,
There's nothing much to save
And a bitter voice in the mirror cries,
"Hey, Prince, you need a shave."
Now if you can manage to get
Your trembling fingers to behave,
Why don't you try unwrapping
A stainless steel razor blade?
That's right, it's come to this,
Yes it's come to this,
And wasn't it a long way down,
Wasn't it a strange way down?

There's no hot water
And the cold is running thin.
Well, what do you expect from
The kind of places you've been living in?
Don't drink from that cup,
It's all caked and cracked along the rim.
That's not the electric light, my friend,
That is your vision growing dim.
Cover up your face with soap, there,
Now you're Santa Claus.
And you've got a gift for anyone
Who will give you his applause.
I thought you were a racing man,
Ah, but you couldn't take the pace.
That's a funeral in the mirror
And it's stopping at your face.
That's right, it's come to this,
Yes it's come to this,
And wasn't it a long way down,
Ah wasn't it a strange way down?

Once there was a path
And a girl with chestnut hair,
And you passed the summers
Picking all of the berries that grew there
There were times she was a woman,
Oh, there were times she was just a child,
And you held her in the shadows
Where the raspberries grow wild.
And you climbed the twilight mountains
And you sang about the view,
And everywhere that you wandered
Love seemed to go along with you.
That's a hard one to remember,
Yes it makes you clench your fist.
And then the veins stand out like highways,
All along your wrist.
And yes it's come to this,
It's come to this,
And wasn't it a long way down,
Wasn't it a strange way down?
You can still find a job,
Go out and talk to a friend.
On the back of every magazine
There are those coupons you can send.
Why don't you join the Rosicrucians,
They can give you back your hope,
You can find your love with diagrams
On a plain brown envelope.
But you've used up all your coupons
Except the one that seems
To be written on your wrist
Along with several thousand dreams.
Now Santa Claus comes forward,
That's a razor in his mit
And he puts on his dark glasses
And he shows you where to hit
And then the cameras pan,
The stand in stunt man,
Dress rehearsal rag,
It's just the dress rehearsal rag,
You know this dress rehearsal rag,
It's just a dress rehearsal rag.

You say that it's over baby, Lord,
You say that it's over now,
But still you hang around me, come on,
Won't you move over.

You know that I need a man, honey Lord,
You know that I need a man,
But when I ask you to you just tell me
That maybe you can.

Please dontcha do it to me babe, no!
Please dontcha do it to me baby,
Either take this love I offer
Or honey let me be.

I ain't quite a ready for walking, no no no no,
I ain't quite a ready for walking,
And whatcha gonna do with your life,
Life all just dangling ?

Oh yeah, make up your mind, honey,
You're playing with me, hey hey hey,
Make up your mind, darling,
You're playing with me, come on now!
Now either be my loving man,
I said-a let me honey, let me be, yeah!

You say that it's over, baby, no,
You say that it's over now,
But still you hang around me, come on
Won't you move over.

You know that I need a man, honey, I told you so.
You know that I need a man,
But when I ask you to you just tell me
That maybe you can.

Hey! Please dontcha do it to me, babe, no!
Please dontcha do it to me baby,
Either take this love I offer,
Honey let me be.

I said won't you, won't you let me be ?
Honey, you're teasing me.
Yeah, you're playing with my heart, dear,
I believe you're toying with my affections, honey.

I can't take it no more baby,
And furthermore, I don't intend to.
I'm just tired of hanging from the end of a string, honey,
You expect me to fight like a goddamned mule.
Wah, wah, wah, wah, honey...

When you gotta roam
Hear the children singing
My Daddy's coming home
Going down to old Woodstock
Feel the cool night breeze
Going down to old Woodstock
Going down to give my baby a squeeze
Going down to old Woodstock
Feel the cool night breeze
Going down to old Woodstock
Way behind the shady trees
Here I come a swaggering
Way on over the ridge
See the water flowing
Way beneath the bridge
And my woman's waiting
By the kitchen door
I'm driving along
In my old beat up car
Going down to old Woodstock
Feel the cool night breeze
Going down to old Woodstock
Give my child a squeeze
Going down to old Woodstock
To feel the cool night breeze
Going down to old Woodstock
Way behind the shady trees
Listen, oh don't it get you
Get you in your throat
Feel the breezes blowing
All around your coat
Lord don't it get you
When you're bound to roam
Hear your children sing
My Daddy's coming home
Going down to old Woodstock
To feel the cool night breeze
Going down to old Woodstock
Give my child a squeeze
Going down to old Woodstock
To feel the cool night breeze
Going down to old Woodstock
Way behind the shady trees
Going down to old Woodstock
To feel the cool night breeze
Going down to old Woodstock
Give my child a squeeze
Going down to old Woodstock
To feel the cool night breezes

Here I lie in my hospital bed
Tell me, sister Morphine, when are you coming round again?
Oh, I don't think I can wait that long
Oh, you see that I'm not that strong
The scream of the ambulance is sounding in my ears
Tell me, sister Morphine, how long have I been lying here?
What am I doing in this place?
Why does the doctor have no face?
Oh, I can't crawl across the floor
Ah, can't you see, Sister Morphine, I'm trying to score
Well it just goes to show
Things are not what they seem
Please, sister Morphine, turn my nightmares into dreams
Oh, can't you see I'm fading fast?
And that this shot will be my last
Sweet cousin Cocaine, lay your cool cool hand on my head
Ah, come on, sister Morphine, you better make up my bed
'Cause you know and I know in the morning I'll be dead
Yeah, and you can sit around, yeah and you can watch all
The clean white sheets stained red

We're so sorry, Uncle Albert
But if anything should happen we'll be sure to give a ring
We're so sorry, Uncle Albert
But we haven't done a bloody thing all day
We're so sorry, Uncle Albert
But the kettle's on the boil and we're so easily called away

Hands across the water (water)
Heads across the sky
Hands across the water (water)
Heads across the sky
Admiral Halsey notified me
He had to have a berth or he couldn't get to sea
I had another look and I had a cup of tea and butter pie (butter pie)
The butter wouldn't melt so I put it in the pie
Hands across the water (water)
Heads across the sky
Hands across the water (water)
Heads across the sky
Live a little, be a gypsy, get around (get around)
Get your feet up off the ground
Live a little, get around
Live a little, be a gypsy, get around (get around)
Get your feet up off the ground
Live a little, get around
Hands across the water (water)
Heads across the sky
Hands across the water (water)

1119 – John Lennon – How do you sleep? (1971)

John Lennon cantou e tocou guitarra. George Harrison toou slide guitar. Nicky Hopkins tocou piano eletrio Wurlitzer. John Tout tocou piano. Ted Turner, Rod Linton e Andy Davis tocaram violão. Klaus Voorman tocou baixo. Alan White tocou bateria e The Flux Fiddlers tocaram as cordas.

A letra:

So Sgt. Pepper took you by surprise
You better see right through that mother's eyes
Those freaks was right when they said you was dead
The one mistake you made was in your head
How do you sleep?
How do you sleep at night?
You live with straights who tell you, you was king
Jump when your momma tell you anything
The only thing you done was yesterday
And since you've gone you're just another day
How do you sleep?
How do you sleep at night?
How do you sleep?
How do you sleep at night?
A pretty face may last a year or two
But pretty soon they'll see what you can do
The sound you make is muzak to my ears
You must have learned something in all those years
How do you sleep?
How do you sleep at night?

1118 – Leonard Cohen – Avalanche (1971)

Escrita por Leonard Cohen, foi lançada no seu terceiro disco, Songs of Love and Hate, em 1971.

A letra é baseada em um poema que Cohen havia escrito anteriormente. O estilo do violão é clássico de muitas músicas do compositor.

A letra:

Well I stepped into an avalanche
It covered up my soul
When I am not this hunchback that you see
I sleep beneath the golden hill
You who wish to conquer pain
You must learn, learn to serve me well
You strike my side by accident
As you go down for your gold
The cripple here that you clothe and feed
Is neither starved nor cold
He does not ask for your company
Not at the centre, the centre of the world
When I am on a pedestal
You did not raise me there
Your laws do not compel me
To kneel grotesque and bare
I myself am the pedestal
For this ugly hump at which you stare
You who wish to conquer pain
You must learn what makes me kind
The crumbs of love that you offer me
They're the crumbs I've left behind
Your pain is no credential here
It's just the shadow, shadow of my wound
I have begun to long for you
I who have no greed
I have begun to ask for you
I who have no need
You say you've gone away from me
But I can feel you when you breathe
Do not dress in those rags for me
I know you are not poor
And don't love me quite so fiercely now
When you know that you are not sure
It is your turn, beloved
It is your flesh that I wear

A letra:

Cry baby, cry baby, cry baby,
Honey, welcome back home.
I know she told you,
Honey I know she told you that she loved you
Much more than I did,
But all I know is that she left you,
And you swear that you just don't know why,
But you know, honey I'll always,
I'll always be around if you ever want me
Come on and cry, cry baby, cry baby, cry baby,
Oh honey, welcome back home.
Don't you know, honey,
Ain't nobody ever gonna love you
The way I try to do?
Who'll take all your pain,
Honey, your heartache, too?
And if you need me, you know
That I'll always be around if you ever want me
Come on and cry, cry baby, cry baby, cry baby,
Oh daddy, like you always seem to do.
And when you walk around the world, babe,
You said you'd try to look for the end of the road,
You might find out later that the road'll end in Detroit,
Honey, the road'll even end in Kathmandu.
You can go all around the world
Trying to find something to do with your life, baby,
When you only gotta do one thing well,
You only gotta do one thing well to make it in this world, babe.
You got a woman waiting for you there,
All you ever gotta do is be a good man one time to one woman
And that'll be the end of the road, babe,
I know you got more tears to share, babe,
So come on, come on, come on, come on, come on,
And cry, cry baby, cry baby, cry baby.
And if you ever feel a little lonely, dear,
I want you to come on, come on to your mama now,
And if you ever want a little love of a woman
Come on and baby baby baby babe babe baby now
