1017 – The Guess Who – No sugar tonight/New mother nature (1970)

Escrita por Burton Cummings e Randy Bachman, foi gravada em 1969 e lançada em um compacto que tinha American Woman no Lado A em março de 1970. Foi lançada só como No sugar tonight e chegou ao número 39 nos charts pop americanos.

A história surgiu quando Randy Machman estava na California e uns caras estavam por lá olhando as meninas num point. A mulher de um deles chegou e começou a gritar com ele e disse: “You ain't getting no sugar tonight”. Randy gostou e guardou a frase. Acharam curta e juntaram com outra música que Burton Cummings havia feito chamada New mother nature, também em Fá sustenido.

Escrita por Paul Simon (Letra em inglês), Daniel Alomia Robles (Música) e Jorge Milchberg (Arranjo). Foi composta em 1913 como instrumental. Mas a nossa versão é de Simon and Garfunkel, de 1970. Gravada em novembro de 1968 e novembro de 1969, foi lançada no disco Bridge Over Troubled Water e também em setembro de 1970, no compacto que tinha Why don't you write me como Lado B.

Escrita por John Fogerty, foi lançada em janeiro de 1970, em um compacto que tinha Travelin' band como Lado A. É o número 188 da lista da revista Rolling Stones das 500 maiores canções de todos os tempos.

Fogerty disse que estava no festival de Woodstock e de repente começou a chover e meio milhão de pessoas tiraram as roupas. E a pergunta da música surgiu daí. Quem vai parar a chuva?

Escrita por John Lennon mas creditada à dupla Lennon/McCartney, foi gravada em 4 e 8 de fevereiro de 1968 e lançada no disco Let it be, em 8 de maio de 1970. As palavras “words are flowing out like endless rain into a paper cup” vieram pra John ainda em 1967, quando sua esposa Cynthia não parava de falar, de recclamar sobre algo.

A canção teve o sabor influenciado pelo interesse de John na época em meditação transcendental. “Jai Guru Deva om” significa toda a Glória ao guru Deva.

John Lennon acha que essa foi a melhor letra que ele escreveu. Foi gravada junto com Lady Madonna, Hey Bulldog e The Inner Light.

Quando lançada como compacto em março de 1970, chegou ao número 1 dos charts pop americanos. Já em maio ganhou disco de ouro.

Burton Cummings cantou, Randy Bachman tocou guitarra ritmica e solo, Jim Kale tocou baixo e Garry Peterson tocou bateria. Chegou tambem ao número 1 no Canadá.

Escrita por Paul McCartney mas creditada à dupla Lennon/McCartney, foi gravada em 26 de janeiro de 1969 e em 1 de abril de 1970 e lançada em 8 de maio de 1970 no disco Let it be e saiu também como compacto em 11 de maio de 1970, com For you blue como Lado B. Foi o vigésimo e último número 1 dos Beatles nos Estados Unidos.

A gravação do dia 1 de abril foi adicionada arranjos de cordas por Phil Spector. Isso irritou Paul profundamente e foi um dos 6 motivos que ele alegou na Suprema Corte por estar deixando os Beatles.

Foi escrita na Peninsula de Kintyre, onde Paul tem uma fazenda. Ele disse que se inspirou na beleza da calma da Escócia para fazer a canção. Paul gravou a demo durante as gravações do Album Branco. Ofereceu-a a Tom Jones, que recusou-a. Paul disse que a escreveu no estilo Ray Charles.
