Robby Krieger, guitarrista dos Doors, ela foi creditada à banda.
Gravada em agosto de 1966, foi lançada em janeiro de 1967 no disco
de estréia da banda chamado The Doors. Foi lançada como compacto em
maio de 1967 e chegou ao número 1 dos charts pop americanos. Em
1968, chegou ao número 3 dos charts americanos com Jose Feliciano. É
a canção número 35 da revista Rolling Stone na lista das 500
maiores canções de todos os tempos.
Roy Manzarek
tocava ao vivo a linha de baixo com sua mão esquerda no Fender
Rhodes Piano Bass e com sua mão direita tocava as partes de teclado
no Vox Continental. Mas para gravar, Larry Knetchel foi convidado pra
tocar um baixo de precisão Fender.
Em 17 de
setembro de 1967, os Doors foram tocar Light my fire no Ed Sullivan
Show. Entraram num acordo pra substituir Girl we couldn't getter much
higher por Girl we couldn't get much better. Mas quando chegou ao
vivo, cantaram o original, que irritou os anunciantes a alusao as
drogas. Ed Sullivan não apertou a mao da banda e disse que nunca
mais eles tocariam ali.
