Escrita por
Leonard Cohen, foi lançada no disco de estréia de Leonard Cohen em
1967. Pitchfork Media colocou-a como número 190 das 200 maiores
canções dos anos 60.
Foi
inspirada em Marianne Jensen, que Cohen conheceu na ilha grega de
Hydra, em 1960. Cohen disse que ela foi a mulher mais bonita que ele
já encontrou na vida. Ela havia sido deixada pelo marido, o escritor
noruegues Alex Jensen. Ele deixou-a juntamente com o filho deles de
seis meses. Eles começaram a namorar e Cohen levou-a pra casa dela,
em Oslo, na Noruega. Depois ele a convidou pra morar com ele em
Montreal, e ela foi pro Canadá com o filho pequeno.
Eles viveram
juntos por muito tempo, viajando entre Montreal, Nova York e Hydra.
Ele dedicou seu terceiro livro de poesia Flowers for Hitler pra ela.
Ela também inspirou-o em muitas canções e poemas. Ela aparece na
foto de trás do seu segundo disco Songs from a room.
Marianne
morreu em Oslo em 28 de julho de 2016, com a idade de 81 anos.
Leonard Cohen escreveu pra ela pouco antes da morte dela dizendo:
“Saiba que eu estou bem atrás de você, tão perto que se você
esticar sua mão eu acho que você pode alcançar a minha. Até logo
velha amiga, aor sem fim, eu vejo você logo ali...”. Leonard Cohen
morreu três meses depois, em 7 de novembro de 2016.
