174 – The Everly Brothers – Walk right back (1961)

Escrita por Sonny Curtis, foi gravada pelos irmãos Everly em 1960 e lançada em janeiro de 1961 pela Warner Bros., teve Ebony eyes como Lado B do compacto simples. Chegou ao número 7 dos charts pop americanos e numero 1 nos charts ingleses. 

 

Sonny Curtis disse que compôs o primeiro verso da música num domingo à tarde, enquanto servia o exército na Califórnia. Em Hollywood, estavam Don e Phil Everly tendo aulas de atuação pra cinema. Sonny então tocou a música pra Don, somente com o primeiro verso. Don gostou e mostrou ao irmão Phil, que juntos fizeram os arranjos vocais pra canção. 

Prometeram então a Sonny que se caso ele fizesse um segundo verso, eles gravariam a canção. Sonny correu pra terminar e antes mesmo de mandar, os irmãos Everly já haviam gravado a canção assim mesmo, somente repetindo o primeiro verso. 

Perry Como, Andy Williams, o próprio Sonny Curtis, gravaram a canção com os dois versos. Mas Anne Murray em 1978, regravou como os Everly e foi um hit novamente. 

Em 1971, Harry Nilsson também regravou a canção.

173 – Del Shannon – Hats off to Larry (1961)

Escrita por Del Shannon, essa canção foi a primeira que ele lançou depois de Runaway. Não foi número 1 como Runaway, mas foi um hit, chegando ao número 5 dos charts pop americanos e numero 6 nos charts ingleses. 

 

Essa canção foi gravada em apenas um dia. O uso do Melotrom, como em Runaway, criou uma legião de sons iguais pelo mundo inteiro, principalmente no Brasil, na Jovem Guarda. 

O enredo é o narrador falando pra namorada que tira o chapéu pra Larry, pois Larry a dispensou da mesma forma que ela havia feito com ele.

172 – Ricky Nelson – Hello, Mary Lou (1961)

Escrita por Gene Pitney e Cayet Mangiaracina, foi primeiramente gravada por Johnny Duncan, em 1960 e logo apos por Ricky Nelson, em 1961, e que é a nossa escolha aqui pra essa lista. A versão de Ricky Nelson chegou ao número 9 dos charts pop americanos em 28 de maio de 1961. 

 

Chegou também ao número 2 dos charts pop ingleses e foi um grande hit em toda a Europa, particularmente na Noruega, onde passou 14 semanas como numero 1 dos charts noruegueses. O solo de guitarra nessa gravação, que se tornou muito influente no mundo musical, é feito pelo grande guitarrista James Burton, que anos depois iria se tornar o guitarrista principal de Elvis nos anos 1970.

Led Zeppelin gravou-a em ao vivo em 1972, num medley com whole lotta love. Creedence Clearwater Revival gravou-a no seu último álbum Mardi gras, de 1972. O Queen também gravou-a em 1986 e pode ser ouvida no álbum Live at Wembley, de 1986. 

Tem também uma versão em francês gravada por Petula Clark chamada Bye bye mon amour.

Trata-se de uma adaptação feita por Doc Pomus e Mort Shuman de uma canção italiana de 1902, chamada “torna à Surriento”, escrita por Giambattista e Ernesto de Cutis. 

 

Foi gravada por Elvis Presley em 30 de outubro de 1960 e lancada em 7 de fevereiro de 1961, tendo Lonely man como Lado B do compacto simples. 

Chegou ao número 1 dos charts pop americanos e ingleses em 1961 e tornou-se uma das maiores vendagens de compactos de todos os tempos. Foi também numero 2 na Itália e Noruega e numero 6 na Alemanha. É uma das 25 músicas que Pomus e Shuman escreveram pra Elvis.

Chegou também ao número 1 no Japão e Canadá, número 3 na Austrália. Número 7 na Nova Zelândia e número 8 no Reino Unido. A letra de Greenfield foi inspirada no filme de mesmo nome e a música de Neil foi inspirada em uma mistura de Traveling man de Ricky Nelson e Personality de Lloyd Price, ambas estão na nossa lista. 169 – Gary U.S. Bonds – Quarter to three (1961)

Trata-se de uma canção popular, adaptada e acrescida da musica A night with Daddy G – Part I, uma musica instrumental dos Church Street Five, que foi escrita por Gene Barge, Frank Guida e Joseph Royster. Foi gravada por Gary U.S. Bonds e lancada em maio de 1961.
 

Essa gravação chegou ao número 1 dos charts pop americanos em 26 de junho de 1961. Os arranjos vocais foram de Anderson, o nome de nascimento de Gary U.S. Bonds. A qualidade de gravação é péssima, mas o produtor Frank Guida continuou pra sempre dizendo que conseguiu justamente o som que queria e que a aparente baixa qualidade foi desejada por ele. 

Chegou também ao número 11 dos charts ingleses em 2 de setembro de 1961. Bruce Springsteen sempre tocava essa canção no bis de seus shows. Inclusive aparece no seu Hammersmith Odeon London 75. 

É uma das 500 canções que deram forma ao rock and roll, eleita pelo Rock and Roll Hall of fame.
