107 – The Isley Brothers – Shout (1959)

Shout trata-se de uma canção popular muito influente, originalmente gravada pelos Isley Brothers. Foi gravada em 5 de Agosto de 1959, no RCA Victor’s Music Center of The World, em New York City e lançada em 21 de Setembro de 1959, pela RCA. Foi escrita pelos Isley Brothers (Rudolph, Ronald e O’Kelly) como uma forma de call-and-response em reposta à Lonely Teardropes, de Jackie Wilson.

A canção, assim como aconteceu com What I’d say, foi dividida entre os lados A e B, como sendo Shout part 1 and Shout Part 2. Ronald Isley foi o vocal principal, O’Kelly Isley Jr. E Rudolph Isley fizeram os backing vocais.

A canção só chegou a posição de 47 dos charts pop, mas se tornou o primeiro compacto a ganhar disco de ouro baseado em sua longevidade e se transformou em uma música com muitas regravações, incluindo ai artistas americanos e internacionais. 

Apenas um mês depois do seu lançamento, Johnny O’Keefe fez um cover da canção na Austrália, no seu show de TV chamado Six O’Clock Rock, e chegou ao numero 3 dos charts australianos. O próprio O’Keefe regravou a musica em 1964, mas foi um hit menor. A versão de 1964 é a que ficou mais conhecida dele.

Em 1962, Joey Dee and The Starlighters chegou ao numero 6 dos charts americanos, enquanto que a versão dos Isley Brothers entrou nos charts em 1962 novamente, só que no numero 94. A cantora escocesa Lulu chegou ao numero 7 na Grã-Bretanha em 1964, como Lulu and The Luvvers. Ela teve uma regravação da canção em 1986, chegando ao numero 8 dos charts da Grã-Bretanha.   

Os Shangri-Las incluíram uma versão da canção no seu primeiro álbum, em 1965. A canção também foi gravada por Otis Day and The Knights e foi colocada no filme National Lampoon’s Animal House, de 1978. Até hoje a canção é frequentemente tocada no Dartmouth College, uma instituição Ivy League de Hanover, New Hampshire, cuja historia de Animal House foi baseada lá.

A versão original dos Isley Brothers de 1959 apareceu no filme Diner, de 1982. Em 1996, o desenho animado Alvin and The Chipmunks gravaram a canção no álbum Club Chipmunk: The Dance Mixes, com Simon nos vocais principais.

Os Beatles tocavam sempre essa canção, que inclusive foi incluída no álbum Anthology, de 1996. Green Day também tocou a musica ao vivo e é uma favorita dos shows ao vivo deles. É a canção de numero 118 das 500 maiores canções de todos os tempos da revista Rolling Stone e foi induzida ao Grammy Hall of Fame em 1999.

Shout entrou na cultura americana e é bem conhecida. É tocada em casamentos e em festas de família. Já foi usada em comerciais e os Buffalo Bills usam uma parodia da canção como musica de vitoria. A canção já foi usada em muitos brinquedos Elmo.
