Trata-se de mais um clássico de uma das maiores duplas de compositores do rock, Jerry Leiber e Mike Stoller. Foi gravada pelos Coasters em 16 de Julho de 1959 e lançada em Agosto de 1959.
A cancao chegou ao numero 1 dos charts de rhythm and blues e chegou ao numero 7 dos charts populares americanos. Na verdade, essa foi o terceiro top-tem hit de Leiber and Stoller naquele ano. As outras duas foram Charlie Brown e Along Came Jones.
A cancao fala de uma menina chamada Ivy, e seu apelido Poison Ivy porque ela tinha uma reputacao não muito boa com os homens. Pra brincar, a cancao ainda faz referencias a outras flores como Rosa e Margarida (Rose and Daisy) e doenças como measles, mumps, chickenpox, common cold e whooping cough. Porem, depois, os autores revelaram que estavam falando de doenças sexualmente transmissíveis.
The Dave Clark Five gravou a musica em 1963. Os Rolling Stones gravaram uma versão e lançaram em 1964. The Hollies também fizeram sua versão da cancao. Linda McCartney gravou-a em 1987.
No Brasil, ela se transformou em "Erva venenosa".
