332 – Bob Dylan – My back pages (1964)

Escrita por Bob Dylan, foi gravada em 9 de junho de 1964 e lançada em 8 de agosto de 1964 no album Another side of Bob Dylan. A frase “Ah, but I was so much older then, I’m younger than that now”, é uma rejeição de Dylan ao seu idealismo pessoal e político, ilustrando uma crescente desilusao com o movimento folk de protesto dos anos 1960, que ele era associado e seu desejo de ir em outra direcao. A canção foi escrita em 1964, mas só foi tocada ao vivo por ele em 1988. 

Foi regravada por muitos artistas como The Byrds, Ramones, The Box Tops, Jackson Browne e The Hollies, entre outros. A gravação dos Byrds foi lançada em 1967 e foi o ultimo TOP 40 hit da banda. 

My back pages foi a ultima canção que Dylan escreveu pro album Another side of Bob Dylan. 

Na letra, Dylan se critica por achar que antigamente ele sabia tudo e se desculpa por sua ladainha politica, notando que ele se tornou seu proprio inimigo “no instante em que prega”. Ele se pergunta se uma pessoa pode mesmo distinguir se está certo ou errado e até questiona o desejo pelo principio da equidade. É um diálogo interno entre o que Dylan uma vez aceitou e que agora duvidava. 

Em 1992, no concerto que celebrava os 30 anos de carreira de Dylan, foi tocada My back pages, com os arranjos dos Byrds e que teve vocais de George Harrison, Eric Clapton, Tom Petty, Neil Young, Roger McGuinn e do proprio Dylan e solos de guitarra de Clapton e Young. 

A gravacao dos Byrds foi lançada no quarto album da carreira deles, que teve o proprio titulo do album chamado Younger than yesterday, inspirado na canção.

331 – The Beatles – She’s a woman (1964)

Escrita por Paul McCartney mas creditada à Lennon/McCartney, foi uma tentativa de imitar o estilo de Little Richard. Por isso ela é cantada tao alta, mesmo com a voz de tenor de Paul. A estrututa da canção é simples, com a melodia praticamente arrastada pela voz de Paul. Seu baixo e um piano no fundo produzem a contra melodia, com a guitarra de John tocando os acordos no fundo. Depois do primeiro verso, o piano tambem toca os acordes. George Harrison toca um otimo solo durante o middle eight. 

Foi gravada em 8 de outubro de 1964 e foi lançada como Lado B do compacto que tinha I feel fine, em 23 de novembro de 1964, sendo o ultimo compacto que lançariam esse ano. Chegou ao numero 4 nos charts pop americanos. Foi a décima primeira e ultima canção dos Beatles a entrarem no Top Ten dos charts pop americanos em 1964. Até hoje ninguem quebrou esse recorde, de ter 11 Top Ten hits num só ano. Foi tambem a décima segunda canção a ser Top Ten hit num só ano nos Estados Unidos, com relacao aos compositores Lennon/McCartney, ate hoje ninguem quebrou esse recorde tambem.

Essa música foi inspiracao pra Bob Dylan compor Obsviously 5 believers, lançada em 1966 no album Blonde on Blonde. 

Os Beatles começaram a incluir essa cançao nos shows ao vivo em 1965. É caracterizada pelo som percussivo da guitarra de John Rickernbacker 325. Paul fez os vocais, tocou baixo e piano. John tocou guitarra ritmica. George Harrison tocou guitarra solo. Ringo tocou bateria e chocalho. 

Foi regravada por Paul McCartney, Jeff Beck, Joe De Renzo, Scritti Politti, Jose Feliciano, Chet Atkins, entre outros.

330 – The Beach Boys – I get around (1964)

Escrita por Brian Wilson e Mike Love, foi gravada em 2 e 10 de abril de 1964 e lançada no lado A do compacto que tinha Don’t worry baby como Lado B. E que lado B!!! A canção tem Mike Love nos vocais principais para os versos e Brian Wilson nos vocais principais no refrao. 

I get around foi o primeiro hit numero 1 dos Beach Boys nos Estados Unidos, chegando tambem ao numero 7 no Reino Unido e foi tambem o primeiro Top Ten da banda no Reino Unido. Eles tocaram I get around e Wendy no Ed Sullivan Show em 27 de setembro de 1964.

O instrumental foi gravado em 2 de abril de 1964. O vocal foi feito no dia 10 de abril. Os backing vocals foram feitos por Brian, Carl e Dennis Wilson, Mike Love e Alan Jardine. 

O compacto foi lançado em 11 de maio de 1964. Entrou nos charts em 6 de junho no número 17. Chegou ao numero 1 em 4 de julho, tirando A world without love, de Peter and Gordon. Ficou no número 1 por duas semanas até ser substituida por Rag Doll dos Four Seasons.

Mick Jagger deu uma entrevista na TV no Reino Unido dizendo que se tratava de uma otima cancao, o que dizem que ajudou bastante a divulgar a cancao naquelas paragens. Chegou tambem ao numero 38 na Alemanha, tambem 38 na Holanda, e numero 10 no Canadá e numero 10 na Suécia. 

Al Jardine fez os backing vocals e tocou o baixo. Mike Love fez os vocais principais e bateu palmas. Brian Wilson fez os vocais principais, teclados e piano. Carl Wilson fez os backing vocals e tocou guitarra solo e Dennis Wilson fez os backing vocals e tocou bateria. 

Jan and Dean gravaram uma versao em 1965. Red Hot Chilli Peppers tambem fizeram uma versao num tributo à Brian Wilson.

329 – Bob Dylan – Only a pawn in their game (1964)

Escrita por Bob Dylan, foi gravada em 7 de agosto de 1963 e lançada no album The times they are a-changing, em 13 de janeiro de 1964. Trata do assassinato do ativista dos direitos civis Medgar Evers. A canção sugere que o assassino de Evers não agiu por ele mesmo e que ele foi apenas uma marionete na mao das elites brancas que influenciavam os brancos pobres contra os negros para distrai-los de suas posicoes de buchas de canhão. 

Dylan totou Only a pawn in their game pela primeira vez numa manifestacao num dia de registro de voto em Greenwood, Mississipi. Medgar Evars era o lider da NAACP de Mississipi. Bernice Johnson, uma ativista dos direitos civis, disse que essa canção foi a primeira vez que um branco pobre foi tao vitimizado quanto um pobre preto. 

As pessoas de Greenwood não sabiam que Bob Dylan, Pete Seeger e Theodore Bikel eram pessoas famosas, apenas ficaram felizes por eles estarem ali os ajudando.  

Bob Dylan cantou essa música em 1963 na Marcha de Washington para empregos e liberdade, onde Martin Luther King fez seu famoso discurso I have a dream.

328 – The Beatles – If I fell (1964)

Escrita por John Lennon mas creditada à dupla Lennon/McCartney, foi gravada em 27 de fevereiro de 1964 e lançada no album A hard day’s night, em 10 de julho de 1964. Foi tambem lançada em 20 de julho de 1964 num compacto que tinha And I love her como Lado A. 

John disse na sua famosa entrevista à revista Playboy em 1980 que essa foi a primeira tentativa dele de fazer propriamente uma balada. Ele disse que isso mostra que ele escrevia baladas sentimentais de amor desde aquela epoca. 

If I fell foi parte do repertorio dos Beatles durante a visita deles aos Estados Unidos e Canadá em 1964. O grupo tipicamente tocava a canção mais rápida do que a da versao de estudio e Lennon e McCartney sempre a cantavam quase se segurando pra não rir. Em mais de uma ocasiao ela foi apresentada como sendo If I fell over. 

Chegou ao numero 1 na Noruega.

John toou violao e fez os vocais principais. Paul tocou baixo e fez os vocais principais. George Harrison tocou a guitarra de 12 cordas dele, guitarra solo. Ringo tocou as baterias. If I fell era a canção favorita de Kurt Cobain.
