It’s late é uma cancão lançada por Ricky Nelson em 1959, escrita por Dorsey Burnette. Chegou ao número 9 dos charts pop em 1959.

A letra dela é uma espécie de “wake up little Susie”, dos Everly Brothers. Só que nesse caso, em vez de estarem dormindo no cinema, o sujeito tá dizendo para a namorada que está tarde, que não podem ligar para avisar porque não tem mais dinheiro, e mais uma série de desculpas.

E no refrão, ele pede que saiam de casa mais cedo e espera que por estarem tao atrasados, que não esse não seja o ultimo encontro deles. Quando para nossa surpresa, eles já estão vendo sol nascer e o cara tá com medo do que o pai dela vai dizer.

122 – Bobby Darin – Dream lover (1959)

O próprio Bobby Darin foi quem compôs o clássico Dream lover. Foi gravada em 5 de março de 1959 lançada em 1959 pela Atlantic Records e teve como produtores os lendários Ahmet Ertegun e Jerry Wexler. 

A cancão se transformou numa multi-million seller, chegado ao número 2 dos charts pops americanos e numero 1 no Reino Unido por três semanas em 1959. Alem de ter o próprio Bobby Darin nos vocais, a cancão tem ainda o grande Neil Sedaka no piano.

A cancão pode ser vista no filme Hot Shots, estrelado por Charlie Sheen. É tocada durante uma cena em que o personagem de Sheen faz várias peripécias numa motocicleta, tentando impressionar uma garota. E novamente a música é tocada completa nos créditos finais.

A cancão foi regravada por Johnny Burnette em 1961 e por Ben E. King em 1962. Glen Campbell e Tanya Tucker gravaram em 1980 e Ricky Nelson em 1978. Também fizeram uma versão Dion and The Belmonts. Don McLean gravou-a em 1981 e por John Lennon em 1980. A gravação de Lennon pode ser ouvida no álbum The Complete Lost Lennon Tapes.

Música escrita por Chuck Berry e lançada em 1959 pela Chess Records como lado A do compacto que tinha Memphis, Tennessee no lado B. Foi relançada em 1962 no disco “More Chuck Berry”. 

 

A letra da música foi escrita depois que Chuck Berry voltou para os Estados Unidos depois de uma viagem para Austrália e conheceu o modo de vida dos aborígenes australianos. 

Linda Ronstadt regravou-a em 1978, alcançando grande sucesso, no álbum Living in the USA. O single chegou ao numero 16 dos charts pops americanos. No filme Hail Hail Rock’n’Roll, Linda Ronstadt canta a música acompanhada de Keith Richards e Chuck Berry. 

Em 1968, fazendo uma parodia da música, os Beatles escreveram e lançaram a música Back in the U.S.S.R., no álbum branco.

Raining in my heart foi uma música gravada por Buddy Holly em 1958 e lançada em 1959, após a morte de Buddy, pela Coral Records. Foi escrita pela dupla de sucesso Felice e Boudleaux Bryant.

Chegou ao número 88 dos charts pops americanos e era o Lado B do compacto que tinha “It doesn’t matter anymore”.

119 – Eddie Cochran – Teenage heaven (1959)

Canção escrita por Eddie Cochran e Jerry Capehart em 1958. Foi gravada em janeiro de 1959 e  lançada em fevereiro do mesmo ano pela Liberty Records. O Eddie Cochran é que foi o produtor da gravação. 

Ela tocou no filme Go, Johnny go!. A melhor posição a chegar nos charts foi de número 99. O lado B do compacto era a cancão I remembre, que foi também gravada pro filme, mas que ficou de fora da edição final. 

Na gravação, Eddie Cochran fez o vocal e as guitarras. Dave Shriver tocou baixo elétrico e Gene Riggio tocou bateria. Jim Stiver tocou piano e Plas Johnson tocou o sax tenor.

118 – Elvis Presley – (Now and then there’s) A fool such as I (1959)

Trata-se de uma cancão popular escrita por Bill Trader em 1952. A primeira versão dela foi gravada por Hank Snow, chegando ao número 4 dos charts de country no começo de 1953. Se tornou conhecida apenas “Fool such as I” na versão de Snow, e foi regravada por muitos artistas, mas a versão mais conhecida ficou a sendo gravada pelo rei do rock, Elvis Presley. 

A versão de Elvis chegou a número 1 no Reino Unido e numero 2 nos charts americanos. Chegou também ao número 16 dos charts de Rhythm and blues e teve o backing vocals feito pelos Jordanaires. Elvis gravou a cancão em 10 de junho de 1958 e lançou em 10 de março de 1959, pela RCA Records. Essa cancão foi a lado B do compacto que tinha I need your love tonight como lado A.

A versão feita em francês por Petula Clark teve mais sucesso na França do que a versão de Elvis Presley, chegando ao número 9 dos charts franceses. 

Em 1967, Bob Dylan gravou essa cancão durante as sessões do seu famoso Basement Tapes. Esse disco nunca foi lançado oficialmente, mas foi altamente copiado e contrabandeado. Ele gravou-a de novo em abril de 1969, e dessa vez ele foi lancada oficialmente pela Columbia Records, em 1973, no álbum chamado Dylan.

Oh, Carol! Foi escrita por Neil Sedaka e Howard Greenfield. Foi gravada em 1958 e lançada em 1959, pela RCA Victor, mesma gravadora de Elvis Presley. Tornou-se um hit internacional. A Carol da música era a então namorada de Neil Sedaka, chamada Carol Klein, que se tornaria a famosa compositora Carole King.

A cancao chegou ao numero 9 dos charts americanos em 1959 e chegou ao numero 1 dos charts italianos e ficou lá por 4 semanas em janeiro de 1960. A música tem uma marca registrada, que é a parte falada por Neil.

The Four Seasons também gravaram a sua versão em 1962.

Pra começar o ano de 2012, voltemos pra uma música de 1959, e com o artista que começou a nossa lista, Lloyd Price. Essa música dele aqui chama-se Personality, e é a de numero 115 da nossa lista. 
 

Trata-se de um hit escrito por Harold Logan e Lloyd Price e foi lancada num compacto simples por Lloyd Price. Chegou ao numero 2 dos charts pop por 3 semanas e foi o mais popular hit de Lloyd Price que andou em mais de um chart.

Foi também numero 1 dos charts de rhythm and blues, ficando na top position por 4 semanas.

It doesn’t matter anymore é uma balada pop escrita por Paul Anka e gravada por Buddy Holly em 1958. A canção chegou ao número 13 dos charts americanos no começo de 1959, pouco tempo depois da morte de Buddy Holly. O single foi o Lado B do compacto de Raining in my heart. Foi lançada pela Coral Records.

 

Foi o último hit de Buddy Holly pra entrar no top 20 dos charts americanos. Teve uma orquestra na gravação chefiada por Dick Jacobs. Foi também bastante bem sucedida na Grã-Bretanha.

Na Grã-Bretanha, a canção chegou ao numero 1 dos charts ingleses em 24 de Abril de 1959 e ficou no numero 1 por 3 semanas, se tornando o primeiro numero 1 hit póstumo da historia britânica. Ele iria permanecer nos charts até os anos 1960s.

Linda Ronstadt no álbum Heart like a Wheel, de 1974, chegando ao numero 54 dos charts country e 47 dos charts pop em 1975.

A teenager in love foi escrita por Doc Pomus e Mort Shuman e gravada por Dion and The Belmonts. Lançada em Março de 1959, chegou ao número 5 dos charts americanos. Teve I’ve cried before como lado B do compacto simples, lançado pela Laurie Records. 
 

Em Maio de 1959, a canção ocupou 3 posições no TOP 20 britânico, sendo uma a gravação de Dion and The Belmonts e as outras duas gravadas por Marty Wilde e por Craig Douglas. É considerada uma das maiores canções da história do rock and roll.

A canção foi regravada por Bob Marley and The Wailers. Também, em 1970, Simon and Garfunkel fizeram um último show deles como dupla no Forest Hills Tennis Stadium, no Queens, New York City e nesse show, gravaram uma versão de A teenager in love.

Lonely boy foi escrita e gravada por Paul Anka em 1959. Anka cantou essa música no filme Girls Town. Foi lançada pelo selo ABC-Paramount e teve Your love como lado B.

111 – Buddy Holly – Peggy Sue got married (1959)

Peggy Sue got married foi escrita por Buddy Holly e gravada em seu apartamento na 5a Avenida em New York, em 8 de Dezembro de 1958, pouco antes de sair pra sua ultima turnê. Foi lançada como compacto simples, tendo Crying, waiting, hoping como lado A. A música é uma espécie de parte 2 do clássico Peggy Sue, escrita pelo próprio Holly. Foi uma das primeiras sequencias da era do rock.

Buddy gravou os vocais sozinho com seu violão e os músicos de estúdio colocaram o resto dos instrumentos e os backing vocals no dia 30 de Junho de 1959, nos estúdios da Coral Records, em New York City. Uma outra versão foi gravada em 1964, com novos instrumentos mas sem os backing vocals.

Os Crickets, que eram a banda de Holly, gravariam a música depois da morte de Holly, em 1959. Chamaram David Box, um sujeito da mesma cidade de Holly, Lubbock, Texas, e que parecia muito com Holly em termos de voz e colocaram-no como vocalista da banda pra essa versão de Peggy Sue got married. Foi lançada pelo Coral em 1960, como lado B de um compacto que tinha Dont Cha Know como lado A. Os Crickets usaram o mesmo arranjo que tinham feito em Peggy Sue, trocando somente David Box em vez de Buddy Holly.

110 – Eddie Cochran – Something else (1959)

Something else foi composta por Sharon Sheeley e por Bob Cochran. Sharon era a namorada de Eddie Cochran e Bob era o seu irmão mais velho. Foi gravada em 23 de Junho de 1959, tendo o próprio Eddie Cochran como produtor. Foi lançada em Julho de 1959 pelo selo Liberty, tendo Boll Weevil Song como lado B do compacto simples. 

 

A letra é escrita em primeira pessoa e descreve a vontade do cantor em ter um conversível pra conquistar uma garota que ele acha que não vai querer sair com ele. No fim, depois de economizar dinheiro, ele compra um carro um pouco mais velho e toma coragem pra chamar a garota pra sair.

A batida da bateria é idêntica a batida de Keep a knockin’, de Little Richard, pois os compositores queriam fazer uma homenagem a Eddie Cochran, que adorava Little Richard. O baterista da gravação foi o lendário Earl Palmer, que havia sido também o baterista que havia gravado Keep a Knocking. E o curioso foi que nem o próprio Earl Palmer percebeu que a batida das duas músicas eram idênticas. Só depois que veio a perceber. Alem de Earl Palmer na bateria de Something else, Jim Stiver tocou piano e Eddie Cochran tocou guitarra, baixo e claro, colocou a voz.

A canção chegou ao número 22 dos charts britânicos e numero 58 dos charts americanos. A canção foi regravada por vários artistas, como Led Zeppelin, Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers, The Beatles, Keith Richards, The Head Cat e Sid Vicious, entre outros.  A regravação de Sid Vicious, que foi lançada em 23 de Fevereiro de 1979, chegou ao número 3 dos charts britânicos e foi o maior sucesso da carreira solo dele.

A versão do Led Zeppelin foi gravada em 16 de Junho de 1969 e foi lançada em 1997, no álbum BBC Sessions. Foi produzida por Paul Williams e por Jimmy Page.

A versão do Head Cat também é interessante. Trata-se de um super grupo formado por Lemmy do Motörhead, Slim Jim Phantom dos Strays Cats e Danny B. Harvey do Lonesome Spurs. Eles gravaram essa canção pro álbum Walk the walk, talk the talk, de 2011.
