328 – The Beatles – If I fell (1964)

Escrita por John Lennon mas creditada à dupla Lennon/McCartney, foi gravada em 27 de fevereiro de 1964 e lançada no album A hard day’s night, em 10 de julho de 1964. Foi tambem lançada em 20 de julho de 1964 num compacto que tinha And I love her como Lado A. 

John disse na sua famosa entrevista à revista Playboy em 1980 que essa foi a primeira tentativa dele de fazer propriamente uma balada. Ele disse que isso mostra que ele escrevia baladas sentimentais de amor desde aquela epoca. 

If I fell foi parte do repertorio dos Beatles durante a visita deles aos Estados Unidos e Canadá em 1964. O grupo tipicamente tocava a canção mais rápida do que a da versao de estudio e Lennon e McCartney sempre a cantavam quase se segurando pra não rir. Em mais de uma ocasiao ela foi apresentada como sendo If I fell over. 

Chegou ao numero 1 na Noruega.

John toou violao e fez os vocais principais. Paul tocou baixo e fez os vocais principais. George Harrison tocou a guitarra de 12 cordas dele, guitarra solo. Ringo tocou as baterias. If I fell era a canção favorita de Kurt Cobain. 

Foi regravada por Chet Atkins, Maroon 5, Evan Rachel Wood, Rita Lee, Cilla Black, Reba McEntire, entre outros artistas.

Chegou ao numero 6 no Canada, 3 no Reino Unido, 10 nos charts pop americanos e 10 nos charts de Rhythm and Blues. 

Foi regravada por Status Quo, The Troggs e alguns outros artistas.

326 – Bob Dylan – With God on our side (1964)

Escrita por Bob Dylan, foi gravada em 7 de agosto de 1963 e lançada em 13 de janeiro de 1964 no disco The Times they are a-changing. Bob tocou essa música pela primeira vez no The Town Hall, em New York City, em 12 de abril de 1963.  

A letra é direcionada à noção que os seres humanos tem que Deus ou algum poder maior invariavelmente fica do lado deles e oposto à quem não está de acordo com esse ser humano, e assim eles não questional a moral de guerras lutadas e as atrocidades feitas pelo seu país. 

Dylan menciona muitos eventos históricos, incluindo a matança dos indios americanos no século 19, a guerra Hispano-Americana, a guerra civil americana, a primeira e a segunda guerra mundial, o holocausto, a guerra fria e a traição de Jesus por Judas Iscariotes. 

O titulo se refere ao Epistolo aos Romanos, de Paulo, no primeiro século. “Se Deus está conosco, quem pode estar contra nós”, se referindo a vitoria de Jesus sobre a morte. A frase entao foi usada muitas vezes e reinterpretada nos contextos de guerra.  

Dylan e Joan Baez tocaram-a ao vivo no Newport Folk Festival, em julho de 1963 e em julho de 1964. Ele tambem gravou-a no seu album Unplugged MTV, em 1995. Nessa versao, ele omite os versos sobre os alemaes, os russos, a guerra fria e o holocausto. 

Joan Baez gravou-a ao vivo em 1963. Manfred Mann gravou-a em 1965. Judy Collins em 1993. Burton Cummings em 2004, entre muitos outros artistas.

324 – Bob Dylan – It ain’t me, babe (1964)

Escrita por Bob Dylan, foi gravada em 9 de junho de 1964 e lançada em 8 de agosto de 1964, pela Columbia Records, no quarto album da carreira de Bob, Another Side of Bob Dylan. Esta canção, como outras no album, mostram uma mudança de Bob Dylan, onde ele começa a explorar as possibilidades da linguagem e um mais profundo nivel da experiencia humana. Um ano depois do seu lançamento, ela foi regravada por artistas que estavam forjando o movimento folk, como The Turtles e The Byrds. 

A inspiração pra canção foi novamente a ex-namorada de Bob Suze Rotolo. Ele começou a escrever essa canção na Itália, ond Suze estava estudando. A frase “no, no, no, it ain’t me babe” é uma parodia de “she loves you, yeah, yeah, yeah”, dos Beatles, trocando a ordem dos “sim” do fim pros “não”, estes no inicio.  

Bob Dylan e Johnny Cash se admiravam mutualmente e com as bençãos de Bob, Johnny Cash gravou uma versao com sua esposa June Carter, lançada em 1065 e se tornou um hit. No filme sobre Johnny Cash, de 2005, I walk the Line, essa canção é interpretada por Joaquim Phoenix e Reese Whiterspoon. 

Os Turtles gravaram-a em 1965 e chegaram ao número 8 nos charts pop americanos. Jan and Dean gravaram-a tambem em 1965. 

Joan Baez tambem regravou-a em 1964. Joan Baez tambem gravou-a ao vivo em dueto com o proprio Dylan duas vezes, em 1964. Nancy Sinatra gravou-a em 1966, Brian Ferry em 1974, Boy George em 2012, entre outros. Miley Cyrus tocou-a ao vivo na sua turnê 2013-2014.
