A versão original dos Melodians saiu na trilha sonora do filme The harder they come, e, 1972 e ganhou fama internacional. A nossa versão no entanto é a de Boney M., um grupo alemão. É o lamento dos judeus que fugiram depois da conquista de Jerusalem em 586 antes de Cristo, pelo povo da Babilonia. O Reino de Israel depois de unidos pelos reis Davi e Salomão, foi dividido em dois, sendo o reino de Israel do Norte, que foi conquistado pelos Assírios em 722 antes de Cristo, o que causou a dispersão de 10 das 12 tribos de Israel e o outro foi o reino do sul, o Reino de Judah, livres até o povo da Babilonia chegar. Foi gravada entre 1977 e 1978 e lançada no disco Nightfight to Venus, o terceiro disco da banda, em 7 de junho de 1978. Foi produzida por Frank Farian. Saiu também em compacto na mesma época, com Brown girl in the ring como Lado B. Chegou ao número 1 no Reino Unido, e número 30 no Billboard Hot 100. É uma das 10 canções que mais venderam no Reino Unido e uma das 7 canções que venderam acima de 2 milhões de cópias por lá. Chegou ao número 1 também na Alemanha Ocidental, Suíça, Suécia, Espanha, África do Sul, Noruega, Nova Zelandia, Holanda, México, Irlanda, Finlandia, Europa, Bélgica, Áustria e Austrália.
