273 – The Beatles – Till there was you (1963)

Escrita por Meredith Wilson para o musical dela de 1957 chamado The Music Man e que iria aparecer em 1962 no filme do musical. A canção é cantada pela bibliotecaria Marian Paroo, interpretada por Barbara Cook na Broadway e por Shirley Jones no cinema. Ela canta a música pro professor Harold Hill no fim do Segundo ato.  

A primeira versão a ser lançada foi em 26 de novembro de 1957, em cópias promocionais do compacto simples. Foi com a orquestra de Nelson Riddle e uma cantora de 17 anos chamada Sue Raney. 

A primeira versão a ter sucesso comercial foi a de Anita Bryant, de 1959, chegou ao número 30 nos charts pop americanos. Em 1961, Peggy Lee gravou uma versão que foi um hit pequeno no Reino Unido. Al Hirt gravou e 1962. Nana Mouskouri também gravou em 1962. Em 1963, foi a vez de Sergio Franchi. 

A versão que escolhemos foi a versão dos Beatles, maravilhosamente cantada por Paul McCartney. Gravada em 18 e 30 de julho de 1963, foi lançada em 22 de novembro de 1963 na versão mono e 30 de novembro de 1963 na versão estéreo. 

Foi inclusa no álbum With the Beatles, o segundo da carreira deles e também o segundo do ano de 1963. Till there was you foi a única música da Broadway que os Beatles gravaram. 

Uma prima de Paul chamada Bett Robbins apresentou pra ele a versão de Till there was you gravada por Peggy Lee. Bett Robbins as vezes era a baby sitter dos dois irmãos McCartney. Paul disse que não sabia que essa música era do musical da Broadway The Music Man. Muito tempo depois que ele ficou sabendo.

Till there was you era parte do repertório dos Beatles de 1962 e chegaram a tocar ao vivo na Alemanha. Era uma prova da versatilidade dos Beatles, provando que eles podiam agradar à várias partes da plateia, saindo de rocks pra baladas. Na apresentação no Royal Variety Show, de 4 de novembro de 1963, eles saíram de Till there was you para Twist and shout.  

Inclusive eles chegaram a tocar Till there was you na audição que foram reprovados na Decca Records em primeiro de janeiro de 1962, em Londres. Na primeira vez que tocaram no Ed Sullivan Show, em 9 de fevereiro de 1964, a segunda música a ser tocada na noite foi justamente Till there was you. 

Uma versão ao vivo de Till there was you foi lançada no álbum Live at BBC, de 1994 e no álbum Anthology 1, de 1995. A do Anthology foi a do Royal Variety show. E tem a famosa frase de John Lennon, ao se dirigir pra onde estava a família real. Ele falou, entre Till there was you e Twist and shout: “For those of you in the cheap seats I'd like you to clap your hands to this one; the rest of you can just rattle your jewelry!” 

Paul cantou e tocou baixo. John tocou violão. George Harrison tocou o violão solo e Ringo tocou bongôs.

270 – Gerry and The Pacemakers – I like it (1963)

Escrita por Mitch Murray, o mesmo que escreveu outro hit de Gerry and The Pacemakers chamada How do you do it. Foi gravada em 24 de abril de 1963 e teve George Martin como produtor. Foi lançada em maio de 1963 em um compacto simples que tinha a música It’s happened to me como Lado B.

O compacto de I like it foi o segundo compacto da banda. I like it chegou ao número 1 nos charts britânicos em 22 de junho de 1963, onde ficou nessa posição por quatro semanas. Chegou ao número 17 nos charts pop americanos em 1964. 

Em 1978, The Rezillos fizeram uma versão punk de I like it. Em 1980, o Depeche Mode tocou I like it ao vivo nos seus shows.

269 – The Beatles – Little child (1963)

Escrita por John Lennon e Paul McCartney, foi gravada em 11 e 12 de setembro e 3 de outubro de 1963. Foi lançada no álbum With The Beatles. Foi escrita inicialmente pra Ringo cantar, mas Ringo insistiu em cantar I wanna be your man e sua vontade foi feita. 

Paul admitiu que Little child era uma música pra completar o álbum e que tirou a frase I’m so sad and lonely” da canção “Whistle my love”, de um cantor britânico de baladas e ator chamado Elton Hayes. 

Foi gravada em três diferentes sessões. A primeira, em 11 de setembro de 1963, os Beatles gravaram dois takes dela. Voltaram no dia 12 e gravaram 16 takes de Little child, incluindo o overdub do piano de Paul McCartney e da Gaita de John Lennon. Ainda voltariam no dia 3 de outubro pra gravar três takes mais. 

John cantou, tocou guitarra rítmica e gaita. Paul cantou, tocou baixo e piano. George Harrison tocou guitarra solo e Ringo tocou bateria na gravação. 

Wreckless Eric gravou uma versão de Little child com James Nicholls em 2013.
