196 – Elvis Presley – No more (1961)

Trata-se de uma versão da música La Paloma, escrita pelo compositor basco Sebastian Iradier, após uma visita que o mesmo fez à Cuba, em 1861. A música foi composta em 1863, apenas dois anos antes da sua morte. Nunca ficaria sabendo que sua composição se tornaria tao popular no mundo inteiro.

O primeiro lugar a fazer sucesso foi o México, mas depois se espalhou pelo mundo inteiro. Inclusive, La Paloma pode ser considerada o primeiro hit popular universal. Já em 1865, apareceram as versões em alemão e francês. Em 1899, a guarda republicana francesa fez uma gravação dessa canção, que foi uma das primeiras gravações que foram feitas.

Foram feitas novas letras em varias línguas e a versão em inglês foi feita por Don Robertson e Hal Blair. Já foi gravada em forma de ópera, pop, jazz, rock, militar e folk music. Entrou também pro livro Guiness dos recordes, por ter sido cantada pelo maior coro do mundo, com 88 mil e 600 pessoas, em Hamburgo, Alemanha, em 9 de maio de 2004.

Na nossa seleção, escolhemos a gravação de Elvis Presley, de 1961, lançada pela RCA Victor. Também foi regravada por Dean Martin, Joan Baez, Harry Belafonte, Maria Callas, Chubby Checker, Perry Como, Bing Crosby, Placido Domingo, Connie Francis, Bill Haley and His Comets, Julio Iglesias, Charlie Parker, Luciano Pavarotti, Edit Piaf, Caetano Veloso, entre outros artistas do mundo inteiro.

No filme O poderoso chefão II, de 1974, a banda toca La Paloma na festa de Ano Novo em Havana.

Escrita pelo velho Chuck Berry, foi lançada em fevereiro de 1961, pela Chess Records, tendo Little star como Lado B do compacto simples.

Foi regravada pelos Hollies, pelos Yardbirds, Rolling Stones e pelos Beatles (em duas ocasioes, ao vivo), entre outros artistas.

194 – Del Shannon – Hey, little girl! (1961)

Escrita por Del Shannon, que tentava seguir o sucesso de Runaway, mas a canção só chegou ao número 38 dos charts pop americanos.

A letra conta a história de um cara que reencontra uma garota que ele conhecia de vista, só que na ocasião desse encontro ela estava chorando e ele promete consertar o coração dela que está quebrado, uma vez que ele tinha experiencia no assunto, pois o coração dele já havia sido quebrado anteriormente.

No segundo verso, ele conta que a encontrou no setembro anterior e ela dançava com ele e chegou um cara chamado Joe e disse que ela tinha que ir embora, sem lhe dizer ao menos o nome. E alega que vinha procurando por ela por todos os lados desde então e finalmente agora a encontrara.

Acredito que como os Beatles eram muito fãs de Del Shannon, o título de Here, There and Everywhere, do disco Revolver, foi tirado de um dos versos dessa canção.

Escrita por Doc Pomus e Mort Shuman, foi gravada por Elvis Presley em 25 de junho de 1961 e lançada em 8 de agosto do mesmo ano pela RCA Victor, num compato que trazia Little sister como Lado B.

Foi gravada originalmente por Del Shannon, ainda em junho de 1961. Só depois que foi gravada por Elvis e se tornou famosa com ele. Tem uma batida Bo Diddley. Chegou a numero 4 nos charts pop americanos com a gravacao de Elvis. Chegou tambem ao numero 1 nos charts ingleses.

Foi regravada tambem pelos Smiths e Scorpions.

Escrita ppor Doc Pomus e Mort Shuman, foi lançada pelos Drifters em 1960, pela Atlantic Records, em um compacto simples que tinha “Baltimore” como Lado B. 
 

Teve Bemn E. King como vocalista principal, quando ele ainda era dos Drifters. A gravacao chegou ao numero 16 dos charts pop americanos em 1060.

Foi regravada tambem por Jay and The Americans em 1969, chegando ao numero 6 dos charts pop americanos, porem a gravacao que escolhemos foi a dos Drifters. Lou Reed tambem gravou uma versao dessa cancao.

191 – Wanda Jackson – Let’s have a party (1960)

Escrita por Jessie Mae Robinson, foi gravada inicialmente por Elvis Presley em 1957, pro filme Loving you. A versão que escolhemos aqui é a gravada por Wanda Jackson, de 1960. Chegou ao número nos charts ingleses em setembro de 1960, ficando ali por 8 semanas e chegando posteriormente ao número 32. Chegou também ao número 37 dos charts pop americanos no mesmo ano.

A versão de Jackson foi inclusa no clássico do cinema de 1989 Dead poets society. Paul McCartney também gravou e lançou a canção no seu álbum de 1999 Run devil run. E mudou o nome somente pra Party. A canção título, Run devil run, tem uma melodia similar à Let’s have a party.

Também foi inclusa no musical da Broadway chamado Million Dollar Quartet, também sob o nome de apenas Party. O musical estreou em 10 de abril de 2010. Led Zeppelin costumava tocar essa canção num medley com Whole lotta love.

190 – Fats Domino – Walking to New Orleans (1960)

Escrita por Bobby Charles em 1960, que foi escrita pra Fats Domino. Na verdade Fats Domino era o ídolo-mor de Bobby Charles. Domino encontrou com Charles quando fazia uma turnê e passou por Lafayette, Louisiana. Ele chamou Charles pro camarim e chamou-o pra visita-lo em sua casa em New Orleans.

Charles disse pra Domino que se fosse teria que ir à pé, pois não possuía carro. E essa ideia não saiu da sua cabeça, por isso o titulo da canção é “Walking to New Orleans”. Chegando na casa de Domino, Charles tocou a canção que havia feito chamada Walking to New Orleans. Fats Domino gostou da musica e fez algumas modificações e chamou Dave Bartholomew ora fazer a orquestração e trazer a banda pra acompanhar. Foi gravada no famoso estúdio de Cosimo Matassa.

A canção foi lancada pela Imperial Records e chegou ao numero 6 dos charts pop americanos e número 2 nos charts de rhythm and blues.

Chuck Berry tocou guitarra e cantou. Matt Guitar Murphy também tocou guitarra. Willie Dixon tocou baixo. Eddie Hardy tocou bateria. The Ecuadors fizeram os backing vocals.

188 – The Drifters - Save the last dance for me (1960)

Escrita por Doc Pomus e Mort Shuman, foi gravada pelos Drifters, em 1960, e lançada pela Atlantic Records no mesmo ano. Teve a dupla de compositores Jerry Leiber e Mike Stoller como produtores, que na época estavam aprendendo a produzir com o grande produtor Phil Spector. Os vocais principais foram feitos por Ben E. King.

A versão dos Drifters ficou três semanas como número 1 dos charts pop americanos e uma semana no número 1 dos chart de Rhythm and Blues. Chegaram também ao número 2 dos charts britânicos.

Na música, o narrador diz ao seu amor que ela está livre pra circular por aí e socializar durante a noite toda, mas pra guardar a ultima dança pra ele no fim da noite. Na verdade, essa música foi feita na noite do casamento de Doc Pomus, um dos compositores, que teve poliomielite e tinha dificuldades de andar.

A sua noiva era a atriz da Broadway e Dançarina Willi Burke e circulava entre os convidados. Ele dizia isso pra ela, que dançasse e se divertisse mas que se lembrasse que no fim da noite iria pra casa com ele.

Em Dezembro de 1983, Dolly Parton lançou uma versão country dessa canção. A versão dela chegou ao número 45 dos charts pop americanos, ao número 3 dos charts country e numero 2 dos charts country canadenses.

Em 2006, foi a vez do canadense Michael Bublé lançar a sua versão. A melhor posição alcançada pela versão de Bublé foi a de número 22, nos charts dance club play, número 5 no hot adult contemporary tracks e número 99 nos charts pop americanos. Bublé aparece cantando essa música nos créditos do filme The Wedding Date.

Buck Owens também gravou essa canção, em 1962. Chegou ao número 11 dos charts country americanos. Ike and Tina Turner também gravaram essa canção em 1966, no álbum River deep, mountain high. Jerry Lee Lewis gravou-a durante os anos 1960s.

Durante as gravações do álbum Let it be, os Beatles tocam uma versão dessa canção. Harry Nilsson gravou uma versão em 1974, que foi produzida por John Lennon. Emmylou Harris gravou uma versão em 1979.

Petula Clark e um dos compositores, Mort Shuman, gravaram uma versão em francês. Uma gravação não tem nada a ver com a outra. Cada um gravou a sua versão independente.  

O ato Bruce Willis gravou uma versão e em 2012, Leonard Cohen incluiu essa canção na sua turnê Old Ideas.

Essa canção é o número 182 da lista das 500 maiores canções de todos os tempos, da revista Rolling Stone Magazine.

Escrita por Paul Evans e Matt Williams, foi gravada inicialmente por Cliff Richard em setembro de 1959. A versão que usamos aqui na nossa lista no entanto é a de Elvis Presley, que foi gravada em 4 de abril de 1960.

A versão de Elvis foi lançada como Lado B do compacto que tinha Are you lonesome tonight? Como Lado A.
