lançada em 4 de julho de 1969 em um
compacto que tinha Remember love como Lado B. Foi lançado pela
Plastic Ono Band, sendo o primeiro compacto solo de John Lennon,
lançado enquanto ainda era um Beatle. Se tornou um hino antiguerra
durante os anos 70s. Chegou ao número 14 dos charts pop americanos e
número 2 no Reino Unido.
Foi escrita durante o Bed-in feito por John e Yoko, na lua de mel
deles em Montréal, Canadá. Um reporter o perguntou porque eles
estavam recebendo-os na cama e o que queriam com isso, John respondeu
que estavam apenas dando uma chance à paz. Várias celebridades
estavam presentes na gravação, incluindo Petula Clark, Timothy
Leary, Allen Ginsberg e Tommy Smothers, do Smothers Brothers que
tocou violão junto com John.
Ela virou canção contra guerra e no dia 15 de novembro de 1969,
Pete Seeger reuniu meio milhão de pessoas em Washington para cantar
essa música.
É uma das 500 canções que deram forma ao rock and roll, do Rock
and Roll Hall of Fame.
John cantou e tocou violão. Tom Smothers tocou violão. Yoko Ono
bateu palmas, tocou pandeiro e fez backing vocals. Timothy Leary e
Petula Clark fizeram backing vocals. André Perry fez percussão.
Foi número 1 na Holanda. Foi número 2 na Austria, Belgica e Reino
Unido. Número 4 na Alemanha e Suíça. Número 8 no Canadá. Número
11 na Noruega.
Foi regravada pelo Aerosmith, Elton John, Louis Armstrong, entre
outros artistas.
