Escrita por Bob Dylan, “I and I” foi gravada em 1983 e lançada primeiro no álbum Infidels, o vigésimo segundo álbum de estúdio de Bob Dylan, em 27 de outubro de 1983. A faixa foi lançada como single depois, em novembro de 1983, com “Angel Flying Too Close to the Ground” no lado B. A produção ficou por conta de Mark Knopfler e Bob Dylan. “I and I” é uma das composições mais profundas e espirituais de Dylan nos anos 80. Na letra, ele explora temas de identidade, dualidade, responsabilidade pessoal e conexão divina. O título “I and I” vem do conceito rastafári que significa “nós” ou a união entre o eu individual e Deus. Dylan usa essa ideia para refletir sobre o conflito interno do ser humano, o peso das próprias ações e a busca por redenção. Musicalmente, a faixa tem um arranjo reggae suave e envolvente, com groove marcante, baixo pesado e uma atmosfera reflexiva. O solo de guitarra de Mark Knopfler e a participação de Sly & Robbie na seção rítmica dão um clima especial à gravação.
