99 – Chuck Berry - School days (1957)

Essa é a segunda música da revisão. Composta por Chuck Berry, foi gravada em 21 de Janeiro de 1957, em Chicago, Illinois. Foi lançada em Março de 1957 pela Chess Records e foi produzidas pelos irmãos Leonard e Phil Chess.

 

O guitarrista que tocou com Berry na gravação foi Hubert Sumlin, que tocava com Howlin’ Wolf. No baixo estava Willie Dixon e na bateria, Fred Below.   

É uma das músicas mais conhecidas de Berry e um hino do rock and roll. Primeiramente foi lançada como um compacto simples, mas foi relançada no primeiro LP de Berry chamado After School Session. School days era a música principal de trabalho.

O ultimo verso da canção diz o seguinte: “Hail, hail rock and roll, deliver me from the days of old”. Hail, hail rock and roll se tornou o título de um documentário e um filme-concerto feitos em 1987 sobre Chuck Berry.

A música chegou ao número 3 dos charts de pop americanos e ao número 1 dos charts de rhythm and blues. Chegou também ao número 24 dos charts ingleses.

AC/DC gravou uma versão para o segundo álbum, chamado TNT, mas que foi lançada somente na Austrália. Somente em 1997 que foi lançada internacionalmente, no álbum chamado Volts, que faz parte do box set chamado Bonfire.

Os Beach Boys também gravaram uma versão em 1980, no álbum Keepin’ the summer alive, com Al Jardine nos vocais. Elvis Presley também gravou uma versão ao vivo em 1976 e está disponível do álbum A hot winter night in Dallas.
